Girls Who Code: Summer Immersion Program

Girls Who Code will again host its 7-week Summer Immersion Program in Boston (and 17 other cities) for current high-school sophomore and junior girls.  This day (non-residential) program includes intensive instruction, speakers, demos, workshops, presentations, field trips, and mentorship for careers and academics.  Each Summer Immersion site embeds 20 students in a technology company or university, 9AM-4PM daily.  Applications will be available on January 19, and you can sign up now to express interest and be notified of events.

PROMYS: BU’s Summer Math Program for Young (Motivated) Scientists

Applications are now available for PROMYS, a six-week (July 3-August 13) residential summer program at Boston University for strongly motivated high-school students (ages 15-19) to explore in-depth the creative world of mathematics.  About 80 students are selected from a nationwide/worldwide pool based on solutions to challenging problem sets, school transcripts, teacher recommendations, and short essays explaining their interest in the program.  Financial aid is available as necessary to ensure all who are selected may attend.  Applications are due April 1.

Register Now for ‘STEM in the City’ Summer Day Camp at Wheelock College

Registration is now open for STEM in the City, a summer day camp at Wheelock College in Boston for students entering Grades 8 or 9 next fall.  Students may register for one or two weeks during July 18-29.  The focus is on STEM career and college awareness, with field trips to companies and organizations as well as laboratory classes and tours of Wheelock’s facilities.  Week 1 will focus on Marine and Space sciences, and Week 2 will focus on Environmental and Health sciences.  The cost is $400 per week.  Register online.

“e” inc. Continues Campaign to Send Boston Youth to Science Camp

“e” inc. — Boston’s environment science learning and action center — seeks funding to send two more Boston youth to attend its Summer Science Discovery Programs:  “Oceans” August 17-21 and “New England Habitat” August 24-28.  Through a campaign in July, it raised $1362 for financial support for four kids, but two more have applied and need assistance.  “e” inc. is a community-based non-profit that creates scientifically confident environmental citizens by providing civics and science sessions to children and teens in school-year and summer programs at over 20 Greater Boston schools, community centers, and other educational institutions.  Donations to their IndieGoGo campaign go directly to a scholarship fund that will offset costs for low-income families.

3-Day Professional Development for ‘Bootstrap’ Computer Science, Aug. 10-12

MassCAN (the Massachusetts Computing Attainment Network) is sponsoring a 3-day workshop for Massachusetts math and computer science teachers to explore the Bootstrap curriculum.  With Bootstrap, students ages 12-16 learn algebraic and geometric concepts through computer programming.  The workshop will be held August 10-12, 8AM-4PM at the Framingham State University.  The cost is $25, including breakfast and lunch.  Register online.  For more information, contact Jim Stanton of MassCAN at jstanton@edc.org or 617-618-2456.

BU’s U-Design Summer STEM for Middle Schoolers, July 13-17

Boston University’s U-Design summer STEM program has openings for students in Grades 7-9 in two of its workshops — Robo-Alley and Flight School 101 — running July 13-27, 8:30AM-4PM, at BU’s College of Engineering.  Workshops of up to 20 students will explore design, experimentation, and invention.  Cost is $425 and limited scholarships may be available for those in need.  Register online.  For more information, call 617-353-6919 or e-mail u-design@bu.edu.
