TEC Summer Internships for Current Grade 10-12 Students
The Education Cooperative (TEC) is accepting applications until April 15 for Boston-area summer internships for students currently in Grades 10-12. They include these STEM fields: Computer Science; Engineering; Medical research; Medicine (Audiology, speech); Nutrition; Physical Therapy; Psychology; Radio; Science (geology/seismology); and Veterinary medicine. There will be an information session for students and parents at the Needham Public Library on March 8, 7-8PM.
Registration Open for BU’s Artemis Project: Summer Computer Science for Rising 9th-Grade Girls
Registration is open for Boston University’s Artemis Project, a five-week computer-science summer program for girls entering 9th grade next fall. No prior computer experience is required. Participants learn computer languages (Scratch, AppInventor, HTML, CSS, Python, etc.) and are introduced to robotics, cryptography, artificial intelligence, and circuits. Guest speakers and field trips provide insight into how computer science is applied in the real world. The Artemis Project is led by BU undergraduate women studying Computer Science and Engineering, guided by Cynthia Brossman, Director of BU’s Learning Resource Network. It runs July 5-August 5. Lunch is provided. There is no tuition, but there is a nonrefundable registration fee of $100. Applications, including an essay and two recommendations, are due May 1. Girls Entering Grades 11-12: Registration Open for BU’s Summer Pathways in Science & Engineering, July 8-15
Summer Pathways is a 7-day residential program for girls in the greater Boston area entering Grades 11-12 who show promise and/or interest in STEM. During July 8-15, participants live on the BU campus; explore opportunities in STEM fields; meet with students and faculty in all disciplines; visit laboratories, companies, and museums; listen to career panels; and spend one night as part of the crew of a schooner whale-watching. Studio of Engaging Math: Summer Program (ages 6-12) Open House, Feb. 26
The Studio of Engaging Math in Brighton will hold an open house on Friday, February 26, 6-8PM for kids and their parents to learn about the Studio’s STEAM Summer Program for ages 6-12: Puzzles, games, programming, and painting. Geometry/tessellations/origami. Bridge building. 3D modeling. Strategy games. Programming/video games. The open house will be repeated on Sunday, April 3, Noon-2PM. Harvard Medical School’s Summer MEDscience Program: Applications Open Feb. 15
Harvard Medical School’s MEDscience Summer is a one-week, hands-on, learn-by-doing course for high-school students to learn about medical science while solving complex clinical problems and realistic medical emergencies simulated by life-like mannequin patients. Students also interact with Harvard Medical School students, faculty, and staff. The one-week program is run 9AM-4PM in three sessions, beginning June 13, June 27, or July 11. Register for Newton’s Summer Environmental Science Program
Newton’s Envi Sci Program is a summer outdoor and educational program, July 5 – August 4, for students entering Grades 7 through 10, under the auspices of the Conservation Commission of the City of Newton and located at Bowen Elementary School. Students have fun enjoying the wilderness while learning about environmental science. Highlights include hikes to Blue Hills and Mount Monadnock, bicycle trips, a 12-mile canoe trip on the Charles River, an expedition through the salt marshes of the North shore, and an exhilarating three-day backpacking trip up Mount Washington. Students also conduct an environmental cleanup service project and learn about the environment through science workshops on geology, botany, ecology, water cycle, pollution issues, and conservation. The cost is $1295, and need-based financial aid may be available. Register online or print and send the registration form and release forms. Registration Opens Feb. 4 for BU’s U-Design Summer STEM for Middle Schoolers
Boston University offers several U-Design summer STEM workshops for students in Grades 6-9 at the BU College of Engineering in two separate sessions (8:30AM-4PM): July 11-15 and July 18-22. Here’s info on last summer’s workshops, which included Electrical and Mechanical Gizmos, Robo-Alley, and Flight School 101. Students pick one workshop per session. Registration opens February 4 and is limited to 20 students per session. Cost is $425 and limited scholarships may be available for those in need. - A Camp Fair will be held 12-4PM on January 31 (snow date, February 7) at Newton North HS to showcase offerings in Newton from Newton Parks & Recreation, Newton Community Education, and more: Mad Science, Brain Builders, Innovations, and LEGO Engineering.
- The Underwood PTO is sponsoring the New England Camp Fair. The Camp Fair is open to all local families and will be held 5:30-8PM on Wednesday, February 3 at Bigelow Middle School, with a selection of day and overnight camps for ages 6-14, some of which have STEM programs.
