Summer STEM Camps and Programs

Here are several sources for finding summer STEM programs for kids:

MIT ESP’s Junction High-School Summer Program: Apply During April 13-27

Junction, a non-residential summer STEM program for high-school students offered by  MIT’s Educational Studies Program (ESP) is a two-week intensive program (August 15-26) in which 42 selected high-school students will:

  • Propose, design and carry out an independent study project of their choosing, working closely with an undergraduate mentor in that field (see bios of mentors),
  • Participate in hands-on, college-level afternoon seminars in a variety of fields, and
  • Be part of a tight community of students and mentors.

High-school students should read the mentor biographies and apply online between April 15 and April 28 by responding to essay questions and submitting a proposal for an independent-study project with one of the mentors.  Accepted students will be notified by mid-May and will communicate with mentors weekly until just before the program to refine proposals and begin research, in preparation for their two weeks together.  The cost is $600, and need-based financial aid is available.  For more information, email junction@mit.edu.

MIT’s Summer SeaGlide Workshop: Applications Open

MIT’s Edgerton Center and the National Defense Education Program sponsor SeaGlide, a one-week, intensive design workshop for rising Grade 9-12 students in the greater Boston area.  Students of all experience levels are encouraged to apply to learn how to design, build, and operate an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle.  The workshop runs in MIT’s Building N51 from August 1-5, from 9AM to 4PM.  It’s free (except for lunch), but a $250 refundable deposit is required.  Apply online.  For more information, contact K-12 project coordinator Robert Vieth (email).

Studio of Engaging Math: Summer Program (ages 6-12) Open House, Apr. 3

The Studio of Engaging Math in Brighton will hold an open house on Sunday, April 3, Noon-2PM for kids and their parents to learn about the Studio’s STEAM Summer Program for ages 6-12:  Puzzles, games, programming, and painting.  Geometry/tessellations/origami.  Bridge building.  3D modeling.  Strategy games.  Programming/video games.  For more information, call (617) 903-3168.

Draper High-School Summer Internships: Apply by Apr. 11

The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory in Cambridge is accepting applications from high-school students (16+ years, entering Junior or Senior year) for summer internships, July 11-August 19.  Three or four students will be selected for each of three project teams:

  • Bacteriophage DNA engineering to detect bacterial species
  • Software development for mathematical modeling of underwater implosions in confined areas
  • Android GUI development for calculating targets for cargo air-drop missions based on weather, payload weight, airplane type, and parachute characteristics.

MassBay Summer Programs for Middle and High School

MassBay Community College in Wellesley will again offer summer programs for middle- and high-school students:

STEM Summer 2016 is for students entering Grades 7 and 8.  It runs Monday-Friday, July 11-21, 9AM-3:30PM, costs $350, and includes classes and projects in math, biology, physics, and computers.

Summer Bridge offers two separate tracks for high-school students, and for each a $100 fee is due at registration:

  • For all high-school students:  Four non-credit workshops, Mondays-Thursdays, July 11-21 from 9:30AM to 3:30PM:  Artbotics, Coding with Scratch 2.0, Mobile Apps with AppInventor, and Cool Coding with Raspberry Pi.
  • For rising Juniors, Seniors, and graduating Seniors:  A college-credit, interdisciplinary course, Making a Robot with Pi will be offered Mondays-Thursdays, 9AM-noon, June 27-July 21.

Museum of Science Seeks ‘Teacher in Residence’ — Apply by Apr. 11

Boston’s Museum of Science seeks to hire a K-12 science teacher to be a summer Teacher-in-Residence, July 11 to August 11.  Teachers-in-Residence collaborate on a relevant museum project, participate in a weekly seminar, and work on independent investigations of their choice.  This summer the Museum seeks someone to work with Museum staff to refine field trip planning materials for its newest permanent exhibition: The Yawkey Gallery on the Charles River.  Experience with lesson planning and/or curriculum development on the topics of ecology and the engineering design process is preferred.  Stipend will be $3500.  Apply by April 11.  For more information, email library@mos.org.

Offer Middle-School ‘Zero Robotics’ Program this Summer: Apply by Apr. 15

The Massachusetts Afterschool Partnership invites public and private school and community-based organizations to sponsor MIT’s five-week summer Zero Robotics Program in their communities.  Zero Robotics is a robotics programming competition in which teams of 10-20 middle-school students learn to program satellites (SPHERES) inside the International Space Station (ISS) to solve an annual challenge.  After several phases of virtual competition, finalists are selected to compete in a live championship aboard the ISS.  There are two separate sessions:  June 13 – July 15 and July 5 – August 5.  Organizations must have computers and Internet access, must serve students for a minimum of 15 hours a week, and should complete applications and email them to Andrea Chang (achiang@massafterschool.org) by April 15.  For more information, contact at Andrea at that address or call her at 617-338-0015 ext 105.
