Environmental Science Program is a summer outdoor and educational program, June 29-July 29, for students entering Grades 7 through 10, under the auspices of the Conservation Commission of the City of Newton. Students have fun enjoying the wilderness while learning about environmental science. Highlights include hikes to Blue Hills and Mount Monadnock, bicycle trips, a 12-mile canoe trip on the Charles River, an expedition through the salt marshes of the North shore, and an exhilarating three-day backpacking trip up Mount Washington. Students also conduct an environmental cleanup service project and learn about the environment through science workshops on geology, botany, ecology, water cycle, pollution issues, and conservation. The cost is $1295, and need-based financial aid may be available. Print and send the registration form and release forms. Free Fun Fridays at STEM Museums This Summer
Courtesy of Newton’s Highland Street Foundation, 70 museums and cultural venues will be open for free on a Friday this summer — 7 each Friday for 10 weeks. STEM-oriented museums include:

- August 21: Franklin Park Zoo

MIT’s Summer HSSP for High-School Students — Registration Open Until June 17
MIT’s Summer HSSP is a weekend academic program (July 12-August 16) for students entering Grades 7-12 (plus those who just graduated high school). Courses are run by volunteers on Sundays at various times between 11AM and 5PM. Registration is now open until June 17 on a lottery basis, with equal consideration given to all applicants registering by that deadline. The Innovation Institute in Newtonville has announced its fall schedule (also in PDF) of after-school and weekend STEM courses, including a new course in computer programming with specific appeal to girls. Some spaces are still available in summer courses, which are mostly 9AM-noon for one or two weeks with some full-day exceptions (see schedule). Einstein’s Workshop: Open House for Summer Camp, May 16
Einstein’s Workshop will hold a Summer Camp Open House on Saturday, May 16, 10AM-noon at its headquarters (25 Adams Street in Burlington). Teachers will answer questions and demonstrate examples of what children will learn in its STEM summer classes. There will also be registration discounts, giveaways, and hands-on activities.
MassBay Summer STEM Program for Middle School, July 6-17
MassBay Community College in Wellesley is offering STEM Summer 2015 for students entering Grades 7 and 8, July 6-17. It runs 9AM-3:30PM, costs $350, and includes classes and projects in math, biology, physics, and computers. Although the registration deadline was April 15, MassBay highlighted this program at the MetroWest STEM Education Network meeting on May 1, so applications might still be accepted.
