Summer Program in Architecture for Teens at MIT

The Summer Design/Build for Teens is the highlight of MIT/URBANFRAME’s annual research and design schedule. Started in 2009, the program now accepts 50 youth, ages 15-19, from the U.S. and abroad. Under the guidance of graduate teaching fellows and architect/professor, teams design and build full-scale structures for the community. No prior experience in architecture or construction is required. Monday-Friday, 9AM-3PM. Two sessions (or both): July 1-19 and July 22-August 9.

Summer STEM Camp with MIT & Museum of Science

i2 Camp, based at The Roxbury Latin School, is a hands-on summer day camp designed to broaden the exposure of middle school students to STEM.  i2 Camp developed its program by partnering with MIT, the Museum of Science, Columbia University, and other STEM-oriented organizations.  Each partner has created a series of one-week courses that cover different STEM topics, including the Science of Smart Cities, Genetics & DNA, Engineering and Robotics.  Visit www.i2camp.org for general and enrollment information, or call 617-833-2762.

MIT’s Junction: Summer Program for Advanced High-School Students

Applications are now being accepted for Junction, an MIT non-residential program for advanced high school students in the Boston area, typically grades 10-12. Each year, 100-130 motivated students meet weekday evenings, July 8 – August 15, on MIT’s main campus to learn advanced subjects, meet new friends, and enjoy an academic challenge in a fun environment.  The courses are college-level, requiring significant time outside of class.  Applications are considered equally until April 10, after which students will be admitted on a rolling basis as space allows.  Email junction@mit.edu for more info.

Junction is run by MIT’s Educational Studies Program.  ESP’s other summer program, Summer HSSP, meets once a week on weekends and is open to grades 7-12.  Information for it will be available in May.

Newton Community Education — Summer STEM Programs

Registration is now open for these 14 summer STEM programs offered by Newton Community Education:

STEM Summer Program for Students Entering Kindergarten or Grades 1, or 2

Registration is open for a summer program in robotics and computer programming — for students entering Kindergarten or Grades 1 or 2 next fall.  The program is run by the DevTech Research Group at the Eliot Pearson Department of Child Development at Tufts University, which conducts research in “technologically rich psycho-educational programs aimed at helping children develop in positive ways through the use of technology.”  It’s inspired in part by the work of Seymour Papert.  The program runs from 9AM to 12:30PM daily, in three sessions:  Session 1: June 24-28 ($175), July 1,2,3,5 ($150), and July 8-12 ($175).  Space is limited.  First come, first served.  Register online.  For more info, email summercamp.devtech@gmail.com.

URBANFRAME: MIT Summer Architecture Program for Teens

This summer, in MIT/URBANFRAME’s Teen Design/Build program, 50 teenagers will imagine and build new architectures to transform neglected urban structures into great new public spaces.  The focus will be on “Public Works – New Architecture in Public Spaces.”   Students will visit sites, brainstorm ideas, build 3D models, present their designs, and then build and install their proposals for public use.

These hands-on architectural experiments will use the landscape of existing infrastructure to seed radically new ways to serve the needs of real people in their communities.

The program is for teens 15 to 19.  No experience required. Monday – Friday, 9:00AM to 3:30PM.   Full six-week program (7/1 – 8/9) or 3-week options (7/1 – 7/19 or 7/22 – 8/9).  Apply online.
