Northeastern’s Summer STEM Program for Under-Served, Under-Represented Middle School Students

NUSSP is Northeastern University’s Summer STEM Program for students entering Grades 6-8.  It aims to promote STEM education and opportunities to historically under-served and under-represented students living within 30 miles of Northeastern.  The program introduces college life, increases STEM knowledge, and stimulates interest in STEM careers.  Students attend the two-week program (July 7-18) on Northeastern’s campus free of charge.  They must have an interest in STEM and at least a B average in science and math.  Students should review sample application questions and write their application essays before applying onlineRecommendations from current math/science teachers are required.

Northeastern Summer STEM Programs

Applications are now available for two summer programs at Northeastern University:

The Young Scholars Program is a highly selective program for Boston-area high-school students who have completed either sophomore or junior year and are interested in careers as scientists or engineers.  The program includes laboratory research, career exploration and counseling, and field trips.  Applications are due March 28 or 30 (the website lists both dates), and the program’s tentative schedule is July 1 to August 1.

Northeastern University Summer STEM Program is a free, two-week, academic day program for Boston-area middle-school students entering 6, 7, or 8 grade.  It is designed to stimulate interest in science and engineering and increase skills in math and science.  Applications are due March 31 but be sure to read instructions first.  Classes, scheduled for July 7-18, are taught by Northeastern graduate students with assistance from undergraduates.

DevTech Summer Robotics and Computer Programming (K, 1st, 2nd)

Registration is now open for DevTech summer programs in robotics and computer-programming for children entering Kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd grade.  The DevTech Research Group at the Eliot Pearson Department of Child Development at Tufts University offers these programs in three one-week sessions:  June 23-27, June 30-July 3, and July 7-11.  Each session has two options — either programming with Scratch Jr. or robotics with CHERP.  The cost is $185 (or $160 for the middle session).  Space is limited and applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  For information see ase.tufts.edu/devtech/DevTechSummer2014.asp or email summercamp.devtech@gmail.com.

High-School Students: Work for New Community Ed This Summer?

High-school students who love to work with younger kids and have experience with technology are invited to apply to work for Newton Community Education (NCE) this summer.  NCE runs a variety of summer programs for kids (PDF), many involving STEM.  To apply, email lisa_rucinski@newtoncommunityed.org and write about your background in these areas.  (Concerning these opportunities, NCE would like to hear directly from students, not from parents.)

Maker Camp: Free Virtual Summer Camp for Teens

There’s one more week in this summer’s free, online Maker Camp, sponsored by Google+ and Make: magazine.   Teens build daily projects at home or with friends, share them on Google+, and then join daily Google+ hangouts to learn project tips and tricks and go on virtual field trips on Fridays.  This week’s projects are all about do-it-yourself music, and this weekend’s project is an LED Color Organ.  Next week’s projects focus on special effects in movies.  Join Maker Camp to particpate for one or more days.  Videos of all Google+ hangouts, as well as instructions for all previous projects, are available online.

Olin College of Engineering: Summer Engineering Camps

The Olin College of Engineering in Needham is holding two engineering camps at MIT this summer for grades 2-6 to raise money for a development work trip to Uganda.  One is from July 29 to August 2, and the other is from August 12 to 16.  In these camps, kids will learn about engineering of energy systems, building a sustainable city with solar panels, wind turbines, Legos, and more.  Interested parents should contact Dr. Abigail Mechtenberg at engineeringofenergy@gmail.com. The cost of each camp is $750 per student, but there are several scholarships available if a family is unable to pay the full fee. The majority of the program fee serves to support Olin students’ development work in Uganda.
