Boston Children’s Hospital offers SCOOP — Student Career Opportunities Outreach Program — a six-week summer internship for rising Sophomore, Junior, and Senior high-school students to explore careers in patient care. Students work 22 hours a week alongside mentors in patient services and develop a project to be presented at the end of the program. Applicants must submit this Excel spreadsheet application and a 500-word essay — and arrange to have two letters of recommendation submitted — to staffdevelopment@childrens.harvard.edu no earlier than December 31 and no later than March 6. For more information, contact the SCOOP Program Coordinator, Eva Gómez at the same email address.

Applications Open Nov. 25 for Women’s Technology Summer Program at MIT (Summer Program for After Grade 11)
The Women’s Technology Program at MIT is a rigorous summer residential program (June 27 to July 25) for female high school students who are completing Grade 11, who love and excel in math and science, who have little or no experience in engineering or computer science, who are not yet certain about their plans for college majors, and who want to explore engineering. Through hands-on activities, problem solving, and collaborative learning, students explore either of two fields: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering. Female MIT graduate students design and teach the courses, assisted by female MIT undergraduates. Applications will be available November 25. From a nationwide pool, 40 will be selected for Electrical Engineering/Computer Science and 20 will be selected for Mechanical Engineering.
Tufts Veterinary Summer Program for High School Students
Tufts University’s School of Veterinary Medicine offers a two-week summer program to introduce high-school students to the veterinary profession. It’s an intensive program for students with a passion for animals, health, and science. The residential program, which favors students from outside the Boston area, is for June 28-July 10 for Grades 11-12 or July 19-31 for Grades 10-11. The day program, which is designed primarily for students in the local area, is August 3-13 for Grades 9-12. Admission is competitive based on grade transcripts, two letters of evaluation, extracurricular activities, and an essay.

Spaces Still Open for MIT’s Junction
Rolling admissions are still open for MIT’s Junction, a summer, non-residential series of evening courses taught at the undergraduate level. Junction teachers design their own classes, so most Junction subjects do not conform to any standard high school or college curriculum. They are intense, exciting, experimental, and reliant on students’ work outside of class. Core classes this year that are still open include Cryptographic Security, Advanced Classical Physics, and Chemical Biology and Evolutionary Medicine. Courses meet 5-9PM, Monday through Thursday, July 7-August 14. Each evening includes a core class, dinner, and a seminar class (single- or multi-session classes of great variety, not requiring outside work). The cost is $600, including tuition, dinners, and supplies. Generous, need-based financial aid is available. Apply online.
Khan Academy: Math Missions for Summer

Help the NNHS Science Team Attend Two Summer Competitions
The Newton North HS Science Team seeks financial support for trips to two competitions this summer:
- The students who competed in the Grade 9/10 division for the TEAMS competition are ranked high enough to qualify for the national competition in Washington, DC, June 27-July 1. The teams needs to raise $6000 for this trip.
- The Envirothon team once again is MA State Champion and will be competing in a NorthEast Regional competition this summer.
To make a donation to help the NNHS Science Team attend these competitions for which they have qualified on merit, you may send a check (to “City of Newton” with “NNHS Science Team” in the memo line) to:
