MIT ESP’s Junction High-School Summer Program: Apply by Apr. 24

Junction, a non-residential summer STEM program for high-school students offered by  MIT’s Educational Studies Program (ESP), runs on Sundays June 25 and July 16 to August 20 for selected high-school students who will:

  • Propose, design and carry out an independent study project of their choosing, working closely with an undergraduate mentor in that field,
  • Participate in hands-on, college-level afternoon seminars in a variety of fields, and
  • Be part of a tight community of students and mentors.

High-school students should read apply online by April 24 by responding to essay questions and submitting a proposal for an independent-study project with one of the mentors.  Accepted students will be notified by mid-May and will communicate with mentors weekly until just before the program to refine proposals and begin research, in preparation for their two weeks together.  The cost is $600, and need-based financial aid is available.  For more information, email junction@mit.edu.

Girls Entering Grades 11-12: BU’s Summer Pathways in Science & Engineering, July 7-14

Summer Pathways is a 7-day residential program for girls in the greater Boston area entering Grades 11-12 who show promise and/or interest in STEM.  During July 8-15, participants live on the BU campus; explore opportunities in STEM fields; meet with students and faculty in all disciplines; visit laboratories, companies, and museums; listen to career panels; and spend one night on Boston Harbor’s Thompson Island.  See the brochure (PDF).  The fee of $675 includes all costs, and financial assistance up to $575 is available for demonstrated need.  Applications, including two recommendations from teachers, are due May 1.  For more information, contact Cynthia Brossman at cab@bu.edu or 617-353-7021.

Studio of Engaging Math: Open House and Summer STEAM, Mar. 26

The Studio of Engaging Math, an after-school program for Grades K-8 in Brighton, has two announcements:

  • Open House for prospective students and their parents on Sunday, March 26, 11AM-2PM at 320 Washington Street, Suite 301, in Brighton.  Play games, solve puzzles, win prizes, and learn about math classes and STEAM summer program.
  • STEAM is a summer program in July and August for children ages 6 – 12 to gain exposure to STEM+Art=STEAM with fun, hands-on activities. Classes include introduction to programming, building and modeling, arts and crafts, logic puzzles, and board games. 

Girls Entering Grades 7-8: Sign Up for Tech Savvy at BU, July 24-28

Tech Savvy is a one-week summer STEM program for girls entering Grades 7-8 next fall.  It’s run July 24-28, 9AM-4PM, by the Boston Girls STEM Collaborative.  Each day starts and ends at BU’s Photonics Center and includes activities at a different university:  Northeastern, Wentworth, BU, UMass Boston, or Harvard.  The cost ($250, or $50 for those with demonstrated financial need) covers all activities, transportation, and lunch.  Online registration is open.  Those who are accepted will be asked to submit signed waivers and payment.  For more information, email techsavvy@bostongirlsstem.org.

MassBay Summer Programs for Middle and High School

MassBay Community College in Wellesley will again offer summer programs for middle- and high-school students. For more information or to register, call 781-239-2582 or email stemsummer@post.massbay.edu.

  • STEM Middle School Summer Program is for students entering Grades 7 and 8.  It runs Monday-Friday, July 10-21, 9AM-3:30PM and includes classes and projects in math, biology, physics, and computers.
  • High School STEM Summer Bridge Program offers non-credit workshops for all high-school students, Mondays-Thursdays, July 10-20 from 9:30AM to 3:30PM:  Artbotics, Coding with Scratch, Wearables – Fashion & Technology, and Cool Coding with Raspberry Pi.
  • iCREAT – Introduction to Coding, Robotics, Electronics and Technology is a college-credit, interdisciplinary course for rising Juniors, Seniors, and graduating Seniors, June 26-July 20. Making a Robot with Pi will be offered Mondays-Thursdays, 9AM-noon.

BU’s Summer STEM Programs for Middle- and High-School Students: Open for Registration Now

Boston University hosts many STEM-related summer programs for middle- and high-school students.  Some have registration open now and processed on a rolling basis, while others have registration open now with a deadline.  Here are the ones open now:

Registration is open now, with decisions on a rolling basis, for these:

  • Academic Immersion:  Residential program for rising high-school juniors and seniors focusing this year on Introduction to Experimental Psychology (July 2-12) and Introduction to Medicine (July 23-August 11)
  • High School Honors:  Students who are rising high-school juniors or seniors may choose from 80+ summer-term courses (STEM courses include Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Environment, Mathematics, Physics) on a residential (2 courses) or commuter (1 or 2 courses) basis, July 2-August 11
  • Summer Challenge:  Two-week residential program for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors to learn about college life and participate in two of 20 seminars (STEM choices include Chemistry of Medicine, Electrical Engineering, Anatomy and Physiology, Computer Science, Infectious Diseases).  Three sessions (June 18-30, July 9-21, July 23-August 4)
  • Summer Institute for the Gifted:  Day program for academically gifted/talented children ages 5-12 to pursue a range of courses, July 10-28
  • Summer Preview:  A one-week residential or commuter program for rising freshmen and sophomores to learn about college life and participate in seminars (including Discovering Biology and Exploring Mathematics), July 23-28)
  • SummerLab Biotechnology Program:  Residential or commuter program for students entering Grades 10-12 or rising college freshmen. Students may apply for up to two one-week sessions:  DNA, Genes, and Drug Production (July 10-14 and July 24-28), Clinical Connections (July 17-21  and July 31-August 4)
  • U-Design:  Engineering workshops offered in two one-week sessions (July 10-14, July 17-21) for commuter students entering Grades 7-10

Registration is open now, with application deadlines of April 1, for these:

  • PROMYS:  Intensive study in mathematics for highly motivated students 15 years or older entering Grades 9-12, July 2-August 12.
  • Research Internship in Science & Engineering:  University-level research and mentorship for highly motivated rising high-school seniors, residential or commuter, July 2-August 11.

Registration is open now, with application deadline of May 1 for:

  • Artemis Project, a five-week computer-science summer program for Massachusetts girls entering Grade 9 (see activities and topics in the tentative schedule). No prior computer experience is required.  July 10– August 11.  Applications, including essay and references, are due May 1.

“e” Inc. Summer Science Discovery Program, Ages 6-12

Registration is open for a couple of week-long Summer Science Discovery Programs offered by the “e” Inc. Discovery and Action Center (114 16th Street in Charlestown) for ages 6-12, running daily 9AM-3:30PM (or 5:30PM).  The cost is $350 per week + $15 per extended day.
