STEM Professionals: Participate in Think Big! at Newton Library, Oct. 27

The Newton Free Library, NewtonSTEM, and the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club will again host Think Big! at the Newton Free Library, this time on Saturday, October 27, 2PM-4:30PM.  It’s an opportunity for middle- and high-school students to talk informally (over ice cream from Cabots!) about challenges, satisfactions, and career paths in the wide range of STEM fields. This will be the third iteration, after successful events in November 2015 and March 2018. It will cap Governor Baker’s first STEM week, which aims to raise student interest and awareness in STEM ideas and careers. If you’re a STEM professional — in teaching, research, or commercial/professional work — and you want to inspire and inform the next generation, please email info@newtonSTEM.org or teens@newtonfreelibrary.net.

Registration for students will open on October 1 at 9AM.

Girls Who Code: Register by Oct. 8 …and How to Start (or Join) a Club

The Newton Free Library hosts two sections of the Newton Girls Who Code Club for girls in Grades 6-12. They are very popular, so a lottery will be held for each. Register by October 8 to enter the lottery for Mondays and/or Tuesdays, 7PM-8:30PM. The Newton Free Library will host the following STEM event(s) in October.

  • October 4:  Scratch Club, 7-8PM, Grades 3-4 (no registration; pick up tickets 15 minutes beforehand at the Children’s Desk)
  • October 9: Little Lab Coats, 6:30-7:30PM, ages 6-9 (no registration; pick up tickets 15 minutes beforehand at the Children’s Desk)
  • October 24: Engineering Club, 7-8PM, Grades 5-7.  Online registration opens at 10:41AM on October 3 for the series of all four sessions (October 24, November 28, December 19, and January 23).
  • October 27: Think Big!, 2-4:30PM, Grades 6-12. Online registration opens at 9AM on October 1. Network and talk informally with local STEM professionals about what they do, how they got there, and what advice they may have.

So Many STEM Activities at Newton Boys & Girls Club: Open House Sept. 24

Open House:  The Newton Boys & Girls Club invites all current, former, and prospective families to an Open House at the Club (675 Watertown Street) on Monday, September 24 from 5PM to 7PM. All are invited to see what fun, educational, and developmental opportunities are offered at the Club — including several STEM offerings.

Club Seeks to Hire Part-time 3D Printing Instructor:  The Boys & Girls Club has joined the latest DIY craze — 3D printing! The Club is looking for a paid ($20 per hour) facilitator/instructor to teach kids the basics of using the TinkerCAD program with its brand new MakerBot 3D printer. The Club seeks someone who is passionate about fostering skills with youth in our community, using the Club’s printer and space and the instructor’s own programming. The course will be one hour per week on Fridays, 4PM-5PM, from now through May. Men and women are encouraged to apply. Russian School of Math at Boys and Girls Club:  The award-winning Russian School of Mathematics is again offering a full-year math program at the Boys and Girls Club for Club members in Grades 2-4. This program is free for Club members and is designed help students develop the skills and confidence they need to become strong in mathematics. The class will run on Thursdays, 4PM-5PM, for the school year, starting September 27.  It will be based on the RSM curriculum aiming to build up skills, develop critical and logical thinking, and involve alternative approaches such as hands-on activities, puzzles, and projects to engage students. Students must be Club members and must register for the entire school year. (Club membership is $125 per family per year.)

Science Adventures:  The Club is offering the Science Adventures program to members in Grades 2-6.  It will run on Mondays, 4-5PM, starting September 24. Register here.

Mighty Mechanix:  Stay tuned for this upcoming program for middle-school students using LEGO WeDO and Mindstorm EV3 robots.
