Beaver Works Summer Institute: STEM at MIT for HS Seniors

Beaver Works Summer Institute (BWSI) is a rigorous, world-class STEM program for rising high-school seniors offered by MIT and Lincoln Laboratory. It’s free and runs July 6 – August 2, and this year it will offer ten courses:

  • Autonomous RACECAR Grand Prix
  • Autonomous Air Vehicle Racing
  • Autonomous Cognitive Assistance (Cog*Works)
  • Hacking a 3D Printer
  • Medlytics
  • Embedded Security and Hardware Hacking
  • Build a Cubesat
  • Unmanned Air System–Synthetic Aperture Radar
  • Remote Sensing for Crisis Response
  • Assistive Technology

There’s a multi-step process to qualify and apply. Students must first submit a nomination/reference from a STEM teacher or school administrator in order to receive an application for the free BWSI Online Education Program, which the student must complete in order to apply for the summer programs.

BU’s Summer STEM Programs for Middle- and High-School Students: Open for Registration Now

Boston University hosts many STEM-related summer programs for middle- and high-school students.  Some have registration open now and processed on a rolling basis, while others have registration open now with a deadline.  Here are the ones open now:

Registration is open now, with decisions on a rolling basis, for these:

  • Academic Immersion:  Residential program for rising high-school juniors and seniors focusing this year on Introduction to Experimental Psychology (July 5-24) and Introduction to Medicine (July 26-August 14)
  • Summer Challenge:  Two-week residential program for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors to learn about college life and participate in two of 20 seminars (STEM choices include Chemistry of Medicine, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Abnormal Psychology, Anatomy and Physiology, Infectious Diseases).  Three sessions (June 21-July 2July 12-24July 26-August 7)
  • Summer Institute for the Gifted:  Day program for academically gifted/talented children ages 5-12 to pursue a range of coursesJuly 6-24
  • Summer Preview:  A one-week residential or commuter program for rising freshmen and sophomores to learn about college life and participate in seminars (including Discovering Biology), July 26-31)
  • SummerLab Biotechnology Program:  Residential or commuter program for students entering Grades 10-12 or rising college freshmen. Students may apply for up to two one-week sessions:  DNA, Genes, and Drug Production (July 6-10 and July 20-24), Clinical Connections (July 13-17  and July 27-31)

Registration is open now, with an application deadline of March 15, for:

  • PROMYS:  Intensive study in mathematics for highly motivated students 15 years or older entering Grades 9-12, July 5-August 15.

MassBay Offers STEM Sampler Workshops for Disadvantaged High-School Students

MassBay Community College in Wellesley will offer free, one-week STEM Sampler Workshops this summer for eligible high-school students to explore one of the following, July 13-17, 9AM-3PM:

  • Science (Biotechnology Lab Work)
  • Technology (Robotics and Web Design)
  • Engineering (Engineering Design)
  • Math (interactive, contextualized in STEM)

Eligible students are those who identify as female and are eligible for free or reduced lunch, or will be the first in their family to attend college, or are under-represented in college admissions. Mass. Life Sciences Center: Summer Apprenticeship Internships

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center is facilitating and funding summer internships for Massachusetts high-school students who are at least 16 years old and currently in Grades 10-12. The Summer Apprenticeship Challenge program connects these students with employers throughout the state and subsidizes intern stipends for six weeks) so that life sciences companies and academic researchers can hire interns. Employers do the interviewing and selection, then provide a mentor and a hands-on learning experience. Employers sign up here and students sign up here. For the fourth year, NuVu Studios in Cambridge offers summer programs in three sessions, each with a choice of two-week studios. Registration is now open.

  • Summer 2020 “NuTopia” (Ages 11-13, Grades 6-8).

    Session 2 (July 20-31): Nutopian Machines, Girls Design Video Games, Cyborg Enhancements

Kids 4 Coding: Summer Programs in West Roxbury and Cambridge

Kids 4 Coding, based in Atlanta and now in its 5th year in Massachusetts, will offer half-day and full-day summer programs at Roxbury Latin School (101 St. Theresa Ava, West Roxbury) and Lesley University (31 Everett Street, Cambridge). Programs are collaborative and entertaining, supervised by Massachusetts certified teachers, and taught by university students passionate about technology.
