MIT Splash will be held virtually November 20-21, during which students in Grades 9-12 take mini-courses taught by MIT undergraduates (9AM-9PM on Saturday and 9AM-6PM on Sunday). The lottery course registration is open until November 6, after which remaining space will be filled first-come/first-served. (Tip: To maximize the number of full blocks in your schedule, rank at least 3 classes and star at least 10 classes.) The cost is $40 regardless of the number of courses taken, and financial aid is available. The New England Aquarium‘s next public lecture, supported by the Lowell Institute, will be Into The Deepest Deep – A Conversation with Kathy Sullivan, on November 4, 6:30PM-7:30PM on Zoom. Dr. Kathy Sullivan is a scientist, astronaut, and explorer — the first American woman to walk in space and the first woman to visit the deepest known spot in the ocean, the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench.  She will her talk about her remarkable deep sea expedition and discuss the challenges of exploring this undersea environment that is in some ways harsher and less known than space. The New England Ocean Science Education Collaborative (NEOSEC) will hold its 8th biennial Ocean Literacy Summit — online on November 10 (9AM-1:45PM) with various options for field trips on November 11. The aim is to leverage New England’s assets to engage the public in understanding connections between people and the ocean. The cost is $45 for the online summit plus $20 per field trip. Science Club for Girls offers SCFGLive! — free weekly online science shows to engage Grades K-5 in STEM learning. The Belmont Public Library will host an online talk by Barbara Bates of Mass. Audubon’s Habitat Sanctuary:  The Lives of Native Owls, on October 14, 6:30PM-7:30PM. The talk will focus on four species — Great Horned Owl, Barred Owl, Screech Owl, and Saw-whet Owl — and their adaptations and nesting habits, where to look for them, and how they manage to survive in our western suburbs.
