MIT Museum FebFest Vacation Events, Feb. 18-23

The MIT Museum celebrates February school vacation (February 18-23) with FebFest — a range of activities:

Events for teens and adults, included with museum admission:

  • Nautical Chain Reaction:  February 18, 10AM-Noon and 1:30-3:30PM
  • Nautical Day: February 23, 1-4PM

High-school students (free with pre-registration, which opens February 8):

  • Teen Science Cafe: February 23, 6-8:30PM. Dinner provided.

Workshops for ages 11-14 ($40 per student; pre-registration required):

  • Sail Through Engineering: February 19, 9AM-Noon
  • Structural Engineering: February 20, 9AM-Noon
  • Illuminating Protein Expression: February 22, 9AM-Noon

Walk-in workshops for ages 11+ (under 15 must be accompanied by an adult) $10 per person in addition to museum admission. On-site registration, first-come/first-served, starts at 10AM on day of workshop.

  • Sail Through Engineering: February 19 & 22, 2PM-3:30PM
  • Structural Engineering: February 20, 2PM-3:30PM
  • Intro to 3D Design: February 19 & 21, 10AM-1PM
  • Float Your Boat: February 20 & 22, 10AM-1PM

Idea Hub: Drop into the Museum’s maker space (included with museum admission; 30-minute sessions available for on-site signup on day of event)

STEM Courses at Newton Community Education

New England Sci-Tech: STEM Programs and Maker Space in Natick

New England Sci-Tech is a non-profit STEM education center and maker space on the Natick/Wellesley line (16 Tech Circle in Natick), launched last June. It offers classes and workshops in a wide range of STEM fields, amateur radio licensing, maker lab space, summer and after-school programs, public astronomy nights, educational support for schools and home-schoolers, tutoring, support for science fairs and other student STEM projects, space rentals for birthday parties, and more. Sign up for its mailing lists or become a member (rates of $25 to $75 per month).

Empow Studios: 15% Discount for 2019 Camps Ends Oct. 31

Empow Studios has announced its 2019 schedule for camps with a 15% discount available through October 31. This includes vacation camps in February and April (in Brookline, Lexington, and Newton) as well as summer camps (in Belmont, Back Bay, Brookline, Franklin, Lexington, Natick, Newton, Shrewsbury, and other locations coming soon). Camp themes include Tech & Design, Java Coding, and Minecraft.

Empow Studios: Fall Schedule and One-Day NanoCamps for School Days Off

Empow Studios in Lexington and Newton will offer single-day NanoCamps on the following days that public schools will not be in session:  September 10 & 19, October 8, November 6 (Lexington only) & 12, December 26-28, and January 21. Register online.

Also, Empow Studios’ fall schedule is open for registration, including clubs for MineCraft, Girls STEAM, Video Game Design, Coding, Robotics, and YouTube.

Boston Museum of Science Programs for February Vacation

Boston’s Museum of Science offers these experiences for February school-vacation week:

  • Extended Hours:  9AM-7PM through Saturday, February 24 (and until 9PM on Fridays, as usual).
  • Dream Big: Engineering Our World IMAX Film:  The Museum will offer free screenings of Dream Big at 10AM each day, February 18-24, thanks to NCEES to honor National Engineers Week. Tickets will be available at the box office at 9AM each day on a first come, first served basis to those with exhibit halls admission.
  • Mirror Maze:  Numbers in Nature:  Due to high demand for the maze itself, complimentary timed tickets will be issued at its entrance on a first-come, first-served, space-available basis.
  • Planetarium Shows
  • Wicked Smart:  Permanent exhibit of products and technologies invented in the Boston area.
