BU Online Summer Computing Programs for Young Women

Boston University offers these online summer programs in computing for young women, taught by undergraduates majoring in computer science or engineering. Apply by May 15. Tuition is free, but there is a $50 non-refundable registration fee (waived in cases of financial hardship).

  • CodeBreakers OnlineJuly 6-31 (weekdays, 10AM-Noon and 1PM-3PM), for female students entering Grades 10-11 in the greater Boston area. Learn about computer security with lessons in programming, cryptography, and network security. Guest speakers will discuss careers.
  • AI4ALLJuly 27-August 14 (weekdays, 9:30AM-Noon and 1PM-3:30PM), for female students entering Grades 11-12 in Massachusetts. Explore robotics, computer vision, and natural language processing through lectures, team projects, and lectures by guest speakers.
  • Artemis Online: July 6-31 (weekdays, 9:30AM-Noon and 1PM-3:30PM), for female students entering Grade 9 in a Boston-area school. Learn about Scratch, AppInventor, HTML, CSS, and Python, with introductions to robotics, cryptography, AI, and circuits. Guest speakers, too.

Expedition: Bio — Whitehead Institute Summer Program, Grades 7-8

Applications are open for Expedition: Bio, the Whitehead Institute’s popular two-week summer day program for students entering Grades 7-8. In each of two sessions (July 6-17 and August 3-14), 24 students will participate 9AM-3PM in hands-on activities, laboratory modules, and discussions with scientists about ecology, genetics, chemistry, and bioengineering. The cost is $1000 and there are a limited number of need-based, full-tuition scholarships available.

Registration Open for BU’s Artemis Project: Summer Computer Science for Rising 9th-Grade Girls

Registration is open for Boston University’s Artemis Project, a five-week computer-science summer program for girls entering 9th grade next fall.  No prior computer experience is required.  Participants learn computer languages (Scratch, AppInventor, HTML, CSS, Python, etc.) and are introduced to robotics, cryptography, artificial intelligence, and circuits.  Guest speakers and field trips provide insight into how computer science is applied in the real world.  The Artemis Project is led by BU undergraduate women studying Computer Science and Engineering, guided by Cynthia Brossman, Director of BU’s Learning Resource Network.  It runs July 6-August 7.  Lunch is provided.  There is no tuition, but there is a nonrefundable registration fee of $100.  Applications, including an essay and two recommendations, are due May 1.  For more information, email artemis@bu.edu.

Girls Entering Grades 11-12: BU’s Summer Pathways in Science & Engineering, July 10-17

Summer Pathways is a 7-day residential program for girls in the greater Boston area entering Grades 11-12 who show promise and/or interest in STEM.  During July 10-17, participants live on the BU campus; explore opportunities in STEM fields; meet with students and faculty in all disciplines; visit laboratories, companies, and museums; listen to career panels; and spend one night on Boston Harbor’s Thompson Island.  See the brochure (PDF).  The fee of $675 includes all costs, and financial assistance up to $575 is available for demonstrated need.  Applications, including two recommendations from teachers, are due May 1.  For more information, contact Cynthia Brossman at cab@bu.edu or 617-353-7021.

Tufts CEEO Summer Workshops in Design & Engineering

Tuft’s Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) will hold several one-week workshops this summer to teach students in Grades K-12 about design and engineering. Workshops are led by Tufts staff and undergraduates researching how to teach design and engineering to evoke curiosity and passion for engineering through hands-on design challenges. A limited amount of need-based financial aid is available.

Innovation Institute: ‘Living in the Lab’ Summer Programs

The Innovation Institute (TI2)  in Newtonville offers its Living in the Lab programs this summer for budding scientists and engineers, ages 6-17, in one-week sessions (9AM-Noon), June 22 – August 26, to experiment and design alongside scientists and engineers and experience life in the lab. Bridgewater State: Summer Science Academy, Grades 6-12

Bridgewater State University’s Center for the Advancement of STEM Education will host several one-week sessions of its Summer Science Academy for students entering Grades 6-12 to engage in science classes and hands-on investigation in the BSU Science and Math Center (24 Park Avenue, Bridgewater). Register here by March 20 for a $50 discount, otherwise by June 22. Other discounts for siblings or multiple weeks. Scholarships are available to selected students with demonstrated academic merit and financial need who apply by March 9.
