For more information, email the Director for the Center for STEM Education, Claire Duggan, the 2021 YSP Coordinator, Nicolas Fuchs, or  stem@northeastern.edu.

Application Open for PROMYS: BU’s Summer (Online) Math Program for Young (Motivated) Scientists

Applications are now available for Boston University’s PROMYS, a six-week (July 4-August 14) summer program — online this year — for strongly motivated high-school students (ages 14-19) to explore in-depth the creative world of mathematics.  About 80 students are selected from a nationwide/worldwide pool based on online applications consisting of solutions to challenging problem sets, school transcripts, teacher recommendations, and short essays explaining their interest in the program. The cost is $2500 and financial aid is available as necessary to ensure all who are selected may attend.  Applications are due March 15. MIT’s Women’s Technology Program is an intensive, four-week summer academic program for girls currently in Grade 11 to explore engineering through classes, labs, and projects (see video). It’s usually a residential program, but in 2021 it will be all online, taught live 10AM-5PM weekdays, June 26 – July 23. In 2021, there is no fee to apply or attend. Separate programs are available for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (20 students) and Mechanical Engineering (20 students).  Applicants must have strong curiosity about one of these fields (but no direct experience in it yet) and also excel in math and science. Students with backgrounds underrepresented in STEM and/or few other opportunities to explore these fields are especially encouraged to apply. Applications are now available online and are due January 15. For more information, first check the program’s FAQ and then email wtp@mit.edu. Applications are now open for the Broad Institute’s Summer Scholars Program for highly motivated, rising high-school seniors in the greater Boston area who have a strong interest in science. BSSP is planning for an in-person program next summer but may need to shift to a virtual program. In any case, students are matched with Broad scientists for six weeks (June 28-August 6) conducting original research and will have opportunities to explore careers in science, attend a college fair, present their work to Broad scientists in a poster session, and participate in social events. There’s no cost to apply or attend, and compensation is available for students demonstrating a financial need. Excitement for science is required, but no previous experience is needed. Students from communities or situations underrepresented in STEM are particularly encouraged to apply. Apply by January 22. For more information, see this FAQ page or email bssp@broadinstitute.org.

LigerBots Complete Session 2 of Online Summer cAMP for Elementary Students

The LigerBots robotics team has completed the second two-week session of its online summer LigerBots cAMP (Awesome Mentoring Program) for elementary students. with much enthusiasm and support from teen counselors and their elementary-school students. Each session ends with a showcase of students’ accomplishments, and this session’s celebration highlighted CAD creations, music composed in under six hours, and a drawing of a well constructed Aquaponics system. This summer the LigerBots cAMP will connect with about 200 students in Newton, Needham, Lexington, Boston, Brookline, and even New Jersey and Ohio! cAMP gives students opportunities to connect with old and new friends. cAMP’s teen counselors — almost 100 in all, from Newton, Brookline, Cambridge, Andover, and beyond — are gaining experience in teaching and interacting with younger students while building their resumés and having fun. The remaining sessions are August 3-14, and August 17-28.
