MassRobotics JumpStart Fellowships for Female HS Students, Info Session Mar. 18; Apply by Mar. 26

MassRobotics invites female students in Grades 11-12 with a passion for robotics and technology — and especially those who are Black/Latinx — to apply for its paid JumpStart Fellowships that will provide training (3D Modeling/CAD, programming, fabrication and prototyping), industry exposure and networking, and opportunities leading to a career in engineering. The program will begin during the week of April 19-23 and continue with Saturday meetings in May and June, followed by paid summer internships with partner companies. Sign up for an information session on March 18 at 4:30PM. Apply by March 26 with a letter of recommendation from a teacher or other trusted adult.

Summer STEM Institute for HS Students: Apply by Apr. 16

The Summer STEM Institute is a rigorous, selective, pre-collegiate virtual summer program for high-school students aiming to be “top international scientists and leaders.” It consists of a Data Sciences bootcamp, a variety of master classes, and weekend challenges for up to 500 students, plus an optional, six-week mentored research project for up to 100 of those students. Class teachers and project mentors are accomplished undergraduates and other young adults worldwide. The program will run virtually June 20 through August 1. The cost is $2,450 for the bootcamp, master class and weekend challenges, plus $6,450 for the optional research project. Financial aid is available. Applications — including personal information, school information, transcripts and test scores, activities and awards, and a personal statement — are due April 16. Empow Studios: Summer Camp Open House, Feb. 25

On February 25 at 7PM, Empow Studios will host a free, online Open House to discuss summer camp opportunities in both on-campus and live virtual programs, including including Coding, Roblox, Minecraft, Sphero, and Outdoor STEM. Attendees will receive a discount on summer programs. Register here. On-campus summer programs are available in Newton, Lexington, Natick, Boston, Acton, and Winchester. Space is limited to 8 campers per counselor for on-campus and 6 campers per counselor for live virtual programs.

Blue Hill Observatory: Summer Meteorology Workshop

Blue Hill Observatory will host its Summer Meteorology Workshop, July 12-17, for up to eight students who have an interest in the weather and wish to explore careers in meteorology and atmospheric science with professional meteorologists and scientists. It’s recommended for ages 14-18, but other ages may apply. The cost is $650 and financial aid may be available. Harvard Medical School: TeleMED Online Summer Programs, Grades 9-12

While Harvard Medical School’s in-person MEDscience summer program has been postponed for 2021, its teleMED programs for Grades 9-12 will be offered online this summer in one-week sessions (10AM-3:15PM). The cost of $1,800 includes the teleMED toolkit, and a limited amount of scholarship funds are available for Boston-area students. Apply by March 31.   • teleMED Online is the introductory level, with 10 weekly sessions available June 14 through August 27. Students learn about diagnosis and treatment, clinical skills, and health care careers.
  • teleMED 2.0. Online is available for students who have completed MEDscience or teleMED, with weekly sessions available June 14 through July 16. Students explore more in-depth patient cases and a wider variety of careers.

CSRecitations to Offer In-Person Group Classes in July for Students Entering Grades 6-7

In addition to offering in-person private and semi-private tutoring for a wide range of grade levels, CSRecititations (5 Michigan Drive in Natick) will offer in-person group classes in July for students entering Grades 6-7 in the fall. These group classes will be offered in two levels: “Back on Track” for students who have had a rough year in hybrid and remote learning, and “Rapid Advance” for students ready for more challenge as indicated by a placement test.

LLRISE: MIT Lincoln Laboratory Summer Radar Program for Rising High-School Seniors

MIT Lincoln Laboratory offers the Lincoln Laboratory Radar Introduction for Student Engineers (LLRISE), a two-week summer workshop for 18 rising high-school seniors to build small radar systems. It’s free and will be held July 11-23. It’s usually a residential program, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MIT Lincoln Laboratory will hold its summer programs virtually and will following MIT’s policy on K-12 Summer programming. Students from a wide range of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Apply online by 10PM on March 27, including uploading of transcripts, standardized test scores, and two teacher recommendations. For more information, contact LLRISE@LL.mit.edu.

Girls Who Code: Apply for Online Summer Immersion Program

Girls Who Code has changed its Summer Immersion Program to be a free two-week virtual program. It’s for girls — trans and cis — and non-binary students currently in Grades 9-11 to learn computer science and get exposure to technology jobs. No previous experience is required — just an interest in technology and willingness to learn. For more information, see the FAQs in this flyer and view this recorded webinar about last summer’s virtual program. Space is limited for the Summer Immersion Program, and applications are due in mid-February for early acceptance or in mid-March for everyone else. The application takes about 20-30 minutes and does not require grades or recommendations. Students may also apply for a $300 need-based stipend.
