The Calculus Project aims to narrow the achievement gap in mathematics and increase the number of African American, Hispanic, and low-income students who complete calculus in high school. Rising seventh and eighth graders participate in small-group intensive summer instruction in mathematics and related workshops to gain academic skills and confidence, followed by after-school tutoring during the school year.
The DaVinci Program Newton South HS is a project-based collaborative approach to learning science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Students build skills in experimentation, analytical problem solving, collaboration, presentation, communication, and artistic representation through authentic and student-driven learning.
Nominations Open for Mass. STEM Teacher of the Year
Nominations are open until January 21 for the Massachusetts STEM Teacher of the Year. All teachers nominated will be invited to submit an application. The winning teacher’s school will receive a $5,000 grant for STEM in that school or district, and the winning teacher will be honored at the Massachusetts STEM Summit next November.
$15K Matching for NNHS Fundraiser for BioTech Equipment
Last week, at an event to showcase the NNHS Science Department and its plans to acquire new equipment (miniPCR–the DNA Discovery System) for biology and upper-year electives, the Newton North HS PTSO announced at $15,000 match for donations toward this goal. MIT Museum Teen Science Cafe: AI & U, Dec. 15
The MIT Museum (265 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge) will host its next Teen Science Cafe for Grades 9-12 on December 15, 6-8:30PM, focused on the future of Artificial Intelligence and its impact. Admission is free and dinner will be provided. Seating is limited and registration is required. Doors will open at 5:45PM and no one will be admitted after 7PM. The event will include short talks and conversations with scientists, as well as time to explore the Museum galleries.
WPI Seeks Presenters for AweSTEM! Celebration, Mar. 27
Each year, Worcester Polytechnic Institute hosts AweSTEM!, a celebration of STEM education for educators. This year it will be held on March 27, 3:30-5:30PM, with the theme Growing STEM in Our Communities. Educators are invited to apply by December 14, as individuals or teams, to share via an exhibit an activity, lesson, or initiative that is unique, exemplary, and illustrating the theme of Growing STEM in Our Communities. STEM Professionals: Sign Up to Judge the New England Future Cities Competition, Jan.
The New England Regional competition for the 2018-19 Future Cities program will be held January 26 at Watertown Middle School (68 Waverly Ave., Watertown). STEM professionals can support the competition, either as mentors throughout the fall semester or as judges before and during the regional competitions (info here). Newton North PTSO Science Fundraiser; Parent Meeting on Hands-On Learning in Biology, Dec. 6
This year’s annual Newton North HS PTSO fundraiser for Educational Excellence is focusing on funding new equipment for hands-on learning in biology and upper-year electives. On December 6, 7:15-8:45PM, the NNHS Science Department invites parents to learn about the school’s science programs with a hands-on activity, Q&A with Science Department chair Heather Haines, and brief remarks by Zeke Alvarez-Saavedra, co-founder of miniPCR–the DNA Discovery System. Mass. Audubon Program: Young Leaders for Climate Justice
The Massachusetts Audubon Society is inviting teams of 3 to 12 high-school students to participate in Young Leaders for Climate Justice. Teams will attend a Climate Learning Intensive Program on January 26, create and implement action projects, and meet again to present their projects at Mass Audobon’s Climate Summit on May 18. Teams must apply by December 21. The fee is $300 per team, and financial assistance is available. For more information, email dfteens@massaudubon.org.
