TiE Young Entrepreneurship Academy, Grades 9-12, Apply by Aug. 15
The TiE Young Entrepreneurship Academy is a rigorous, six-month, in-person extracurricular program (September-April) for Boston-area students in Grades 9-12 to foster skills in building a startup. Participants meet in Kendall Square in Cambridge every other Saturday, except for school breaks. The program uses a proven curriculum in entrepreneurship and business acceleration, taught by experts in the field, to help students tackle real-world problems. Along the way, it helps students identify and develop pathways to reach personal and professional goals while collaborating with like-minded peers and learning from startup founders and industry experts. The program includes a competition for up to $5,000 in seed funding and a chance to represent Boston at the TYE Global Competition (where the Boston team came in 2nd place this year). The cost is $1,750 and financial assistance may be available. Space is limited, and the application deadline is August 15. The Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers (MAST) seeks proposals for presentations at its annual conference, November 5 at the Best Western Royal Plaza in Marlborough. The theme of the conference will be “Rekindle, Rethink, Recharge,” and presentations may be lectures, workshops, or share-a-thons. Applications will be accepted online until September 18.
Science and Us: Online Community of HS Students Interested in Science Communication
Science and Us — a youth-led organization for high-school students to explore science communication, media, and policy — seeks high-school students from the Greater Boston area to join their community. In the past, the organization has held in-person Makeathons at Boston University, Harvard, and MIT. Science and Us is now building an online community via the online platform Discord and welcomes new members to make friends, create projects, and receive expert feedback. Letters to a Pre-Scientist: STEM Professional Pen-Pal Program for Grades 5-10
Letters to a Pre-Scientist (LPS) is a non-profit initiative to facilitate one-on-one, pen-pal conversations between students in Grades 5-10 in low-income communities and STEM professionals in order to humanize STEM professionals, to inspire students to explore a future in STEM, and to demystify STEM career pathways. STEM professionals sign up in July-August and are matched with students in September based on shared interests. Students and their STEM professional partners exchange at least four letters during the school year. Entire classrooms of students participate in the program, each led by a teacher recruited by LPS and committed to the program. Started by one teacher in 2010, LPS has grown to other schools. Tax-deductible donations are appreciated.
