STEM Pathways — a Boston University/MIT outreach program for synthetic biology — will host its spring Dinner & Dialogue at BU on October 11, 4:30-7PM to “bring together teachers and administrators with the region’s STEM outreach programs, universities, industries, and resources for impact discussions and networking.” The organization seeks input to ensure that high-school graduates have access to synthetic biology programs at Boston University and MIT, and that industry has a workforce that is skilled and technically competent for projected needs. Thomas Edison Scavenger Hunt, Sept. 25 – Oct. 10
The Edison Innovation Foundation will hold the Thomas Edison Scavenger Hunt starting September 15 and ending October 10. Contestants will find answers on the Edison Innovation Foundation’s social-media platforms to compete for prizes. Rules and questions will be released at the start of the competition.
Register by Sept. 24 for ‘Girls Who Code’ Club — Info Night, Sept. 18
There will be an information session about Newton’s Girls Who Code club for girls and their parents on Monday, September 18, 7-9PM at the Newton Free Library. Registration is now open for the 2017-18 season of club meetings, which will be held at the library in two sections: Tuesdays 6:30 – 8:30PM and Fridays 4-6PM (see calendar). Each section has room for 15 new girls and 10 returning girls, and a lottery will be used to allocate seats if they are over-subscribed. Register for the lottery by Sunday, September 24. Museum of Science: Free College-Student Night, Sept. 22
Boston’s Museum of Science will hold its annual College Night on September 22, 5-9PM, for college students (with ID) to explore the museum for free and attend planetarium or Omni Theater films at reduced rates.
Red Sox STEM Career Fair at Fenway Park, Sept. 25.
The Boston Red Sox will hold a STEM Career Fair on Monday, September 25, noon-4PM before their 7:10PM game against the Toronto Blue Jays. It’s an opportunity for STEM professionals and college students to hear iRobot CEO Colin Angle speak and to network with organizations such as iRobot, Boston Civil Engineers, DONG Energy, GE, Raytheon, Museum of Science, Tyco, Cisco Systems, Assemble Systems, Dana Farber, Mass Audobons Nature and Wildlife, Buildium, Mass Clean Energy Center, The May Institute, National Grid, Mass Business Roundtable, Science from Science, and General Dynamics. Tickets cost $23 and include admission to the career fair and the game.
Northeastern Seed to STEM Discussion on Women in STEM, Sept. 26
Northeastern University’s Women Who Empower and Northeastern Circuits programs will co-host Seed to STEM, a free panel discussion about women in STEM, on September 26, 6-9PM, at the school’s Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Complex (805 Columbus Avenue, Boston). Registration is required and free. The event will be broadcast live on Northeastern’s alumni Facebook page starting at 7:15PM.
WPI Clean Energy Symposium for Massachusetts College Students, Sept. 29
Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and Worcester Polytechnic Institute will host a Student Clean Energy Symposium on September 29, 8:30AM-3PM, at WPI’s Rubin Campus Center (West Street in Worcester) for all Massachusetts college students to network and clean-energy companies, attend panels, and explore paid internship opportunities. Registration is open now for the 14th annual Massachusetts STEM Summit will be held November 14, 8AM-3:45PM at the DCU Center (40 Foster Street in Worcester). Admission, including breakfast and lunch, is $50 for the general public and free for students. See this year’s schedule and exhibitors.
This year, Newton South HS faculty members Divya Shannon (math), Amy Richard (biochemistry), and Molly Baring-Gould (art) will offer a presentation about the school’s daVinci STEAM program: Building a STEAM Learning Community.
STEM Internships in MetroWest: Networking Event for Hosts, Oct. 24
On October 24, the MetroWest STEM Education Network and The Davis Companies will host a panel discussion and networking event to connect local businesses and educational institutions to discuss STEM internship programs and partnerships. The event will be held 8:30-10:30AM at The Davis Companies (325 Donald Lynch Boulevard, Suite 201, in Marlborough). It will feature businesses currently offering internships for high-school and college students. Businesses, high schools, community colleges, and four-year colleges and universities, local chambers of commerce, and non-profit organizations are invited to present their resources and programs.
