Tufts CEEO’s ‘Exploring Engineering’ for Grades 5-8, Feb. 23

Tufts University’s Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) will host Exploring Engineering for Grades 5-8 on February 23, 10AM-Noon in Tufts’s Alumnae Lounge, Aidekman Lobby, and Remis Sculpture Court. Northeastern’s ‘Engineering for Everyone’ Expo, Feb. 23

Students of all ages are invited to the Engineering for Everyone Expo hosted by Northeastern University’s Center for STEM Education on February 23, 10AM-1PM, at the university’s Curry Student Center Indoor Quad.  It’s part of Northeastern’s celebration of National Engineers Week.  Families, parents, and children are welcome to this free event full of activities, experiments, and demonstrations led by engineering students in organizations like NUTRONS, AIAA, BMES, GWISE, IEEE, IISE, Maker Club, and STEMOut. Pre-registration is suggested and will enter you in a raffle.

Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program: Info Session Feb. 12

The Newton Free Library will host an information session about the Girls Who Code free, 7-week Summer Immersion Program for girls currently in Grades 10-11 to learn computer science and get exposure to technology jobs. The session will be held in the Library’s Druker Auditorium on February 12, 7-8PM. No prior experience is necessary to apply for the summer program. Stipends are available based on need. The program will be held in 14 cities, including Boston (July 9 – August 24). The application has one question and does not require grades or recommendations. Apply by February 16 for early acceptance or by March 16 for the regular deadline.

Boston Tech Mom’s Boston STEM Fair, in Waltham, Mar. 11, 1-4PM

Boston Tech Mom is sponsoring the second annual Boston STEM Fair open house on March 11, 1PM-4PM at the Embassy Suites hotel (550 Winter Street, Waltham). It’s free for parents and kids (Grades K-12) who want to learn about opportunities in STEM including summer camps, after-school programs, college planning, etc. Exhibitors will discuss robotics, engineering, coding, science, tech entrepreneurship, and more.  There will also be raffles for prizes.

MetroHacks Hackathon: Women in Code, Mar. 24

MetroHacks, run by high-school students to host high-school hackathons in the Boston area, will host MetroHacks: Women in Code, a 12-hour girls hackathon on March 24 at the Cambridge Innovation Center. It will feature speakers, workshops, collaborative projects, and prizes. The event is free, and meals will be provided. Girls in Grades 8-12, with or without computer experience, are invited to register. Read about their event last year.

Newton Community Ed: Early-Release Science Days

Newton Community Education is partnering with Wicked Cool for Kids to offer Early Release Science Days for Grades 1-4 at Horace Mann, Underwood, Cabot at Carr, and Bowen elementary schools on days when Newton Public Schools are released early. The cost is $65 per session, and you can save $15 by registering for all three sessions.

  • Wednesday, February 7Squishy Circuits:  Combine make-your-own play-dough with electronics to build circuits. Concoct colored conductive and insulating dough, and integrate batteries and LEDs to make creations with light-up components.
  • Thursday, March 8Slime Time:  Create six amazing slime samples. Make glow-in-the-dark slime and super smelly putty. Whip up some polka-dot slime and concoct color explosion goop. Finish up with undersea slime and a bouncy-ball formula.
  • Thursday, May 3 Space Base:  Travel into deep space and construct a human habitat. Determine what you’ll need to terraform a planet. Decide how you’ll grow food, where to live, and how to communicate with Earth. Construct buildings and landscapes for the survival of humankind.
