Just as spring begins to appear, the Blue Hill Observatory is offering a free webinar, A Winter Retrospective, on April 28 at 12PM featuring Dr. Judah Cohen of Atmospheric and Environmental Research and Harvey Leonard, Meteorologist at WCVB TV reviewing actual results vs their predictions for this last winter. Empow Studios: STEM Open House in Newton, Apr. 9
Empow Studios will host a free Open House in its Newton location on April 9, 1PM-3:30PM, so parents and students can meet the Empow team and learn about Empow’s award-winning, project-based STEM classes and camps. Tours will start every 30 minutes. Register here for the Open House. Empow Studios encourages self-confidence, curiosity, creativity, and collaboration through the design and creation of animated movies, video games, 3D-printed objects, and other projects. Enrollment is now open for summer camps and after-school classes, both in-person and online.
Broad Institute Science for All Seasons: A Personal Journey to Understand and Overcome Prion Disease, Apr. 19
The Broad Institute will host a free, public, virtual event in its Science for All Seasons series, A Personal Journey to Understand and Overcome Prion Disease, on April 19, 12PM-1PM. Sonia Vallabh and her husband, Eric Minikel, will describe how they have helped to redefine the nature of prion disease — a progressive, degenerative, and currently untreatable disorder — and built a community of scientists, patients, and families addressing this challenge. Newton Free Library Online (Ages 6-9): Little Lab Coats — The Human Body, Apr. 19
The Newton Free Library will host another virtual session of its STEM series for ages 6-9: Little Lab Coats: The Human Body! on April 19 at 6PM. This one-hour program will talk about respiration, digestion, and other complex systems that use important organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs. Registration is required, and there are only a few seats left available. A Zoom link will be sent to registrants before the program.
“e” Inc. Virtual Fundraiser: Wild & Scenic Film Festival, Apr. 30
“e” inc.’s annual fundraiser, the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, will be virtual this year, on April 30, 6:30PM-9PM. It’s designed to raise awareness of environmental issues globally and to inspire activism in the greater Boston area. You can purchase all-access passes now for $25 to view any of nine films: Vet in the Wild, Shaba, Finding Salmon, It’s Bean Too Hot, Hidden Wild, El Mago Georges, Cormie the Pick Pocket, Community Not on Our Soil, An Alaskan Fight, A Flyfishing Refugee, A Fire for All, and The Bat Woman and Bat Man of India.
McAuliffe Center: Star-Gazing, Apr. 11
The Christa McAuliffe Center at Framingham State University will host an evening of stargazing and observation on April 11, 7:30PM-8:30PM (cloud date: April 12), in FSU’s O’Connor parking lot by Maynard Road in Framingham. Masks are required.
Grades 9-12: Reserve a Spot Now for Harvard Splash!, Apr. 23-24
Students in Grades 9-12 can sign up now (until noon on April 17) to reserve a spot — first come, first served — for Harvard’s Splash! — a weekend of free, online classes taught by undergraduates. This year, Splash! will run virtually on April 23 (10AM-12:15PM) and April 24 (1PM-3:15PM). Registration will begin on April 18 for all those who have reserved a spot. HMSC: Amazing Archaeology Fair, Mar. 27
Harvard Museums of Science and Culture will host its Amazing Archaeology Fair on Sunday, March 27, 1PM-4PM, at two museums: Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology (11 Divinity Avenue) and Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East (6 Divinity Avenue) in Cambridge. It’s free with museum admission, which is free on Sundays but requires advance reservations, which are limited in number. Masks and proof of vaccination or negative Covid test are required.
Code Ninjas in Wellesley: Open House Mar. 27, Hack-A-Thon Apr. 10
Code Ninjas (161 Linden Street in Wellesley) will host the following events:
- 3rd Birthday Open House: STEM activities, games, and more — free and open to the public. Learn how kids learn coding while building video games. March 27, 1PM-3PM.
- Spring Hack-A-Thon: Teams of two (either registered together or paired on-site) will have two hours to create a computer game. Kids in ages 5-7 will use ScratchJr, and kids in ages 8-14 will use Scratch. The event is free, and all participants are encouraged to donate a new item to The Home for Little Wanderers. April 10, 1PM-4:30PM.
‘Touch Tomorrow’ STEM Festival at WPI, Apr. 2
Worcester Polytechnic Institute and WGBH will present Touch Tomorrow — a free festival of science, technology, and robots — on Saturday, April 2, 10AM-4PM at Polar Park (100 Madison Ave., Worcester). It’s family-friendly, fun, free, and open to all ages — with a particular focus on what’s interesting for middle- and high-school students. Programming includes hands-on activities, exhibits by WPI and others, and an Innovation Showcase. Proof of vaccination or negative Covid test is required. Register here.
