Register for MIT’s Summer Virtual HSSP, Grades 7-12

Students entering Grades 7-12 (plus those who just graduated) are invited to register for MIT’s Summer HSSP, which will run virtually this year on six Saturdays, Noon-5PM, July 11 – August 15. Register by June 25 with your preferences for classes to be entered in the lottery for class assignment. The total cost is $40, which is paid after the lottery results are announced. Generous need-based financial aid is available. For more information, email summer-hssp@mit.edu. Edge on Science: Safe, In-Person Summer STEM Programs

Edge on Science will offer safe, in-person, week-long summer STEM programs at Lasell University in Newton. Choose among eight tracks: Super Science Sampler, Drone & Code, Summer Rocket Blast Off, Catapult Engineering, Bridge Building, the Hydraulics Makerspace, Galileo’s Astronomy and Microscope Adventures. Under its COVID-19 rules and guidelines, enrollment is limited to 8 students per program and programs are designed to allow students to remain 2 meters apart. High-school students may apply to be Counselors-in-Training (see FAQ #6). For more information, call 315-773-5673.

Harvard Museums of Science and Culture: Summer Science Weeks

The Harvard Museums of Science and Culture will offer week-long virtual Summer Science Week programs with live Zoom programs followed by at-home activities for children entering Grades 1-6. With each Zoom session about 40-50 minutes, the programs will take a total of one to two hours per day, depending on your child’s level of interest. Programs are limited to 10 students each. Cost is $65 ($58 for HMSC members). Registration for each program closes one week beforehand. For more information, email reservations@hmsc.harvard.edu.

Jane Street’s 8th Annual ‘Women in STEM’ Program, July 27-28

Jane Street Capital — a quantitative trading firm in New York City — will host its eighth annual Women in STEM event virtually over two days, July 27-28, inviting selected women graduating from high school in 2020 to learn about the firm and how it uses math, computer science, and probability in its business. Apply to Join TiE’s Young Entrepreneur’s Program, 2020-21

The TiE Young Entrepreneurs is a rigorous, six-month extracurricular program for students in Grades 9-12 to foster skills in building a startup. It uses a proven curriculum in entrepreneurship and business acceleration, taught by experts in the field, to help students tackle real-world problems. Along the way, it helps students identify and develop pathways to reach personal and professional goals. This year, TYE will offer a fully immersive, virtual program. Space is limited, and applications are due August 15. TYE will host a free informational webinar, 11AM to Noon on June 13 (registration required).

Science Club for Girls: Free Online Shows

Science Club for Girls has broadcast six online sessions of its weekly science show, SCFG Live!: Spring Into STEM, with hands-on activities, videos, podcasts, and virtual tours. Recordings of these shows are available on SCFG’s Facebook page, YouTube channel, the SCFG website, and the public-access television stations of Somerville, Cambridge, Lawrence, Lowell, Boston, and Brookline. New live shows will start the week of June 12.

Museum of Science #MOSatHome Schedule, June 1-5

Boston’s Museum of Science offers free live online sessions with museum educators the week of June 1-5, with similar events scheduled at the same times in future weeks. Register via the link above for these:

  • Coolest Science Stories: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12PM.
  • Science in Action: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 1PM, including Water is Weird, and Playing with Polymers.
  • Virtual Planetarium: Tuesday at 1PM, Friday at 2PM, including Exploring Space and The Sky Tonight.
  • STEM Beyond School:  Monday through Thursday at 2PM: At-home engineering activities, including Exploring Computers and a Weekly STEM Challenge, using the Museum’s EiE curriculum.
  • Ask a Scientist: Monday through Friday at 3PM and Tuesday at 12PM:  Q&A panels on topics such as marvelous mammals, human evolution, lightning, and space exploration.
  • Live Animals: Thursday at 1PM, What’s That Smell?
