MSEN Speaker Series for STEM Week: ‘See Yourself in STEM’

The MetroWest STEM Education Network is hosting an online speaker series, See Yourself in STEM, with talks during Massachusetts STEM Week for high-school students, college students, educators, parents, and the public:

Science Olympiad Launches MySO for Everyone in Grades 6-12

Science Olympiad runs annual STEM Olympiad tournaments for middle and high school students and has recently launched a new, nine-month program, MySO, for all students in Grades 6-12 who love STEM and want to stay engaged in learning. MySO offers free STEM session videos and lesson plans with new topics each month, such as epidemiology and space. Students may also purchase $10 admissions to monthly STEM Showdowns to compete in these topics with other students nationwide in Division B (Grades 6-9) or Division C (Grades 10-12).

Science Club for Girls: 25th Anniversary Catalyst Awards Video

Science Club for Girls celebrated its 25th anniversary Catalyst Awards online last week. You can view their video presentation, which gives a great overview of how SCFG excels at fostering excitement, confidence, and literacy in STEM for girls and young women from underrepresented communities. SCFG offers free, experiential activities in STEM for K-8 girls; junior mentoring and leadership experiences for high school girls; and adult mentoring and role modeling by committed women with STEM careers. You can support SCFG through donations and volunteering.

FSU Planetarium Online — AstroNights for Families: Mars Mania, Oct. 16

The Christa McAuliffe Center at Framingham State University will kick off a new season of its free, virtual planetarium events for families (ages 6+) with an online presentation, Mars Mania. On October 16 at 7PM, former NASA astronaut and current MIT professor Dr. Jeff Hoffman will talk about Mars — three days after Mars reaches opposition (shortest possible distance from earth). Dr. Hoffman will talk about the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover, currently on its way to Mars and carrying MOXIE, an instrument developed in collaboration with his department at MIT. Harvard Museum of Natural History: Free Online Events for National Fossil Day, Oct. 22

Paleontologists at the Harvard Museum of Natural History will celebrate National Fossil Day (October 22) with four online presentations for young students. Register for each Zoom session with these links:

  • 9-9:30AM: Trace fossils and how fossils are prepared and preserved in the lab
  • 10:30-11AM: Soft and shell invertebrate fossils, including trilobite
  • 12-12:30PM: Some favorite fossils, including ancient reef fossils from the Guadalupe Mountains
  • 1:30-2PM: Fossil detective work to learn how ancient animals, including T-Rex, grew and moved
