“e” inc. Science Emporium Store Goes Online and Curbside

“e” inc.’s Science Emporium store of STEM projects, books, and games for kids (and some adults) will launch online with curbside pickup available starting on November 9. From the launch through November 20, the store will offer a 20% discount on all current inventory of books and a 15% discount on all other current inventory. “e” inc. and its store are located in Suite 1030 at 114 16th Street in Charlestown.

Empow Studios Webinar: How Video Games Provide Learning Opportunities for Your Kids, Nov. 4

Empow Studios will present a webinar, How Video Games Provide Learning Opportunities for Your Kids, on November 4 at 5PM. Empow Studio’s video-game experts will discuss the latest research, what kids can learn when they are engaged in video games, and ways that parents can support such learning. Empow Studios offers STEM programs, after school and in the summer, for ages 7-15, in Newton, Lexington, and online.

Woods Hole Data Jam: Grades 6-12 Analyze Data & Present Findings Through Art

The Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute is again hosting Data Jam, a competition in which teams of middle- or high-school students graph, analyze, and interpret a set of data (already gathered by Woods Hole scientists) and creatively present their findings as a compelling, data-based story that is communicated to the general public through art, music, dance, or other medium of expression. The competition is available in three different levels: Easy, Moderate, and Challenging. Each team needs a teachers or other adult as an advisor, and advisors must register their interest. Massachusetts Envirothon Goes Virtual and Hosts Webinars on Natural Resources

The Massachusetts Envirothon is a competition for teams of high school students to explore natural resources with a focus on hands-on, team-oriented problem solving and community involvement. In past years, Newton North HS’s team has performed extraordinarily well in this competition. This year, it’s all virtual, including the final competition in May.  Also, the Envirothon will be hosting a series of free webinars broadcast on weekday afternoons through December and recorded for later viewing, as well:

Online Math Center Launches After-School Tutoring, Grades 5-12

Online Math Center (OMC) is a newly launched math tutoring company offering online after-school algebra and geometry lessons for middle and high school students. OMC aims to be “creative, bold, free-thinking, and rigorous.” Classes are interactive and augmented with games, with an average of 5 students meeting for 1-2 hours, three times a week. Lincoln Labs’ Science on Saturday: Our Amazing Atmosphere & Its Gases, Oct. 31

MIT Lincoln Laboratory is offering its Science on Saturdays programs virtually this year, and registration is NOT required. The programs are free and designed for children aged 5-17, their parents, and teachers. On Saturday, October 31 at 10AM, the program will be Our Amazing Atmosphere & Its Gases. Learn about the gases that make up the atmosphere, how dry ice can create dense fog, how liquid nitrogen freezes things. and about an aluminum fuel that releases hydrogen when it contacts pure water. MIT Museum: Hands-On Science for Families, at Home

The MIT Museum is offering a series of Hands-On Science for Families programs to be done at home by families (ages 11+). Each program runs for three consecutive weeks and includes three one-hour virtual sessions with an MIT Museum Educator, all the supplies needed for projects and challenge activities, and online access for discussion and questions while working on projects between sessions. There’s a maximum of 8 families per program, so sign up soon via these links:

  • Imaging Science: How to use mobile cameras to capture high-speed events, the tiniest macro details on everyday objects, and more.  December 2-22 with live sessions 7PM-8PM on December 2, 9, and 16. Register by November 18. $90 per family.
  • (Circuit) Board Game Design:  Designing a game, programming a microcontroller, and testing it with other families.  February 3-23, 2021 with live sessions 7PM-8PM on February 3, 10, and 17. Register by January 25. $70 per family.
  • Crashing and Folding — Lunar Lander Challenge: Build a prototype lunar lander with origami, paper circuits, and mechanical engineering.  March 31 – Apr. 20, 2021 with live sessions 7PM-8PM on March 31, April 7, and 14. Register by March 22. $70 per family.
