Grades 9-12: First-Come/First-Served Registration Nov. 11-15 for Virtual MIT Splash, Nov. 20-21
MIT Splash will be held virtually November 20-21, during which students in Grades 9-12 take mini-courses taught by MIT undergraduates (9AM-9PM on Saturday and 9AM-6PM on Sunday). The initial course lottery registration has closed, and now remaining spaces will be filled first-come/first-served for those registering November 11-15. The cost is $40 regardless of the number of courses taken, and financial aid is available. This year’s catalog includes over 160 courses in Computers and Programming, Engineering, Mathematics, Science, and other subjects. For more information, email splash@mit.edu.
FAA Airport Design Challenge, Nov. 15 – Jan. 14
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is again hosting its Airport Design Challenge for individuals or teams of up to five students in Grades K-12, from November 15 through January 14. Participants use the free version of Minecraft to design virtual airports based on guidance from FAA aerospace and engineering experts. Participating students meet aviation professionals, engage with other designers, and learn about the aerospace industry. Parents/guardians of students register here.
Tufts University Summer STEM Courses for High School Students: Virtual Open House, Nov. 17
Tufts University offers a wide range of pre-college summer courses for high-school students and will host a one-hour “virtual open house” webinar about the program on November 17 at 7PM. MassRobotics JumpStart Fellowship Program: Now Includes Grade 10 and Application Deadline Extended to Nov. 19
MassRobotics will soon launch the second year of its paid JumpStart Fellowships and is now extending the program to include Grade 10 and also extending the application deadline to November 19. JumpStart Fellowships provide high-school girls with training (3D Modeling/CAD, programming, fabrication and prototyping), industry exposure and networking, and opportunities leading to a career in engineering. The program is open to female students in Massachusetts schools in Grades 10-12 with a passion for robotics and technology — and especially those who are Black/Latinx living in Boston. The program will meet on Saturdays, January 8 to May 14, as well as 9AM-4PM daily during the school break February 21-25. Fellows will be eligible to apply for paid internships for summer of 2022. The deadline to apply (including a short essay and a letter of recommendation from a teacher or other trusted adult) has been extended to November 19 (although the application form still says November 1).
FSU Christa McAuliffe Center: Virtual Mission Simulations (Family Events)
The Christa McAuliffe Center at Framingham State University will host these “virtual mission simulations” as family events during upcoming school breaks. The cost is $10 per individual or $15 per team of two on one device. Register here.

Computer Science Scholarship Award for High School Seniors: Apply by Jan. 10
The Computer Science Teachers Association will award up to four ACM Cutler-Bell Prize scholarships to high-school seniors pursuing computer-science studies in college. Each award will be $10,000 of financial aid administered by the colleges. Applications are due 10AM Eastern time on January 10. iGEM Jamboree Online, Nov. 4-14
The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Foundation hosts the annual iGEM Jamboree, which this year will be held virtually, November 4-14. It’s part of the iGEM Competition, which grew from an independent study course at MIT in 2003 to a worldwide network of teams, competitions, and events related to synthetic biology. Most teams consist of college students, and there’s also a track for high-school students, with five high-school teams from the U.S.

MassBioEd’s Apprenticeship Programs — one for Biomanufacturing Technicians and one for Clinical Trial Associates — offer facilitates pathways into the biomedical industry through technical training, on-site work experience with employer partners, and income support. New England Sci-Tech: Upcoming Courses and Public Telescope Nights
The New England Sci-Tech (NEST) STEM education center (16 Tech Circle, off Route 9 in Natick) will host the following courses and events:
- Cubes in Space: A series of workshops on Fridays or Saturdays for ages 11-17 to explore the atmosphere, rocketry, high-altitude balloons, general laws of physics, and space science. Students work in teams to design and propose experiments to launch into space or a near space environment on a NASA sounding rocket and zero-pressure scientific balloon.
- After-School Wednesdays and After-School Fridays: Workshops 3PM-5PM for Grades 4-9 on either Wednesdays or Fridays.
- ONLINE Amateur Radio License Courses: For Technician (Grades 5+), General, and Extra.
- Public Telescope Nights: On Friday and Saturday evenings in the spring, summer, and fall. The next ones scheduled are for November 5 and 6.
