Harvard Medical School: Summer MEDscience Programs

Harvard Medical School’s MEDscience summer program for Grades 9-12 offers three different one-week programs following three different curricula:

  • MEDscience@HMS (clinical): in-person, non-residential, on the medical-school campus, offered each week, June 13 through August 19.
  • MEDscienceLAB (research based): in-person, non-residential, on the medical-school campus, offered each of the weeks beginning June 13, 27; July 11; and August 15.
  • teleMED (online): offered virtually the weeks beginning June 13, 21, 27; July 5, August 1, 8, 15.

McAuliffe Center: Star-Gazing and Update on James Webb Space Telescope, Feb. 7

The Christa McAuliffe Center at Framingham State University will host an evening of stargazing and observation of the Moon and Jupiter on February 7 (cloud date February 8), 5:30PM-7:30PM, in FSU’s O’Connor parking lot by Maynard Road in Framingham. The event will include an update on the progress of the James Webb Space Telescope since its successful launch on December 25. Masks are required.

Newton Free Library: (Virtual) Little Lab Coats — Plants!, Feb. 16

The Newton Free Library will host a virtual session of Little Lab Coats to explore Plants on Wednesday, February 16, 6PM-7PM, for ages 6-9. The topic includes the complex makeup of a plant, how plants provide all living things with oxygen, and how they grow from seeds.  Registration is required and opens at 8:30AM on February 7. Space is limited.  A Zoom link will be sent to registered participants the day before the program.

FSU McAuliffe Center: In-Person February Vacation Program, Grades 6-8, Feb. 24

The Christa McAuliffe Center at Framingham State University will host an in-person afternoon program for Grades 6-8 on February 24, 1PM-4:30PM.  Students can participate in a simulated space mission to Mars, view a full-dome film (Big Astronomy: People, Places, Discoveries) in the FSU planetarium, and participate in hands-on science activities related to the James Webb Space Telescope mission. Registration will open on February 8, close on February 23 at 8PM, and is limited to 24 students. The cost is $35 per person.

Mass. Life Sciences Center: Year-Round Internships for College Students and Graduates

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center is facilitating and funding year-round, paid internships for Massachusetts college students and recent graduates through its Internship Challenge, creating over 550 opportunities each year in life sciences companies and academic research. There is no application deadline but students are encouraged to apply between February and April for the best chance at a summer placement. Employers do the interviewing and selection, then provide a mentor and a hands-on learning experience. Employers sign up here and applicants sign up here. Broad Institute: Count Me In — How Engaging Patients Can Accelerate Cancer Research, Feb. 15

The Broad Institute‘s Science for All Seasons program will present a virtual event, Count Me In — How Engaging Patients Can Accelerate Cancer Research, February 15, 5PM-6PM. Count Me In is a project that engages patients anywhere in the US and Canada who are diagnosed with any kind of cancer, and enables them to accelerate cancer research by sharing their samples, their clinical information, and their voices. The project started in 2015 focused on metastatic breast cancer, expanded to various other cancers, and last fall was opened to patients with any type of cancer.

Coding Butterfly: In-Person Crypto-Art Coding Camp, Feb. 22-24

Coding Butterfly will host a three-day, in-person Crypto Art coding camp, February 22-24, 9AM-3PM daily, for ages 10-13 at 50 Kearny Road in Needham. This vacation camp is dedicated to personal creativity and learning new skills in crypto art, crypto currency, and computer programming. No previous experience is required.
