Informational Meeting on Joining the LigerBots, June 2

Students interested in STEM — or business, or graphic design, or public speaking, or grant writing, or joining a cool student team —  are invited to an introductory, informational meeting for prospective members of the LigerBots, Newton’s award-winning robotics team spanning both NNHS and NSHS.  It will be held Thursday, June 2, 6:30–8:30PM, in the Newton South Wood Shop (Room 9170, by the Auditorium).  All grades, including rising freshmen, are invited, with a special invitation to those interested in outreach/marketing/business.  In this hands-on session, you can drive a robot, use power tools, do engineering challenge games, be part of a new social media campaign, and help students see what makes a top robotics team. Register for Science on Saturday (Science Around Latin America) at MIT Lincoln Labs, June 11

Registration is now open for two Saturday-morning sessions of Science on Saturday, on June 11 at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory (244 Wood Street in Lexington).   The topic will be Exploring Science Around Latin America, presented by the Lincoln Laboratory Hispanic-Latino Network (LLHLN).  All children (5-17 years) must be escorted by an adult, and every adult must be escorted by a child or children.  Children under 5 are not admitted.  Admission is free but each person attending must be registered.  Space is limited, so register online soon for either Session 1 (9AM to 10:30AM) or Session 2: 10:45AM to 12:15PM).  Adults must bring government photo identification.  See other rules on the registration pages.

Teachers on the Estuary — Professional Development, July 25-28 in Falmouth

The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) offers ‘Teachers on the Estuary‘ — a field-based professional development program for middle- and high-school teachers interested in watershed and estuary topics, July 25-28, at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Falmouth on Cape Cod.  See syllabus for Grades 3-5 and Middle-/High-School, as well as an application.  Free but space is limited. Tufts CEEO Summer Programs for Kids Entering Grades 1-2

Tuft’s Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) has openings in two summer workshops for kids entering Grades 1-2 in the Fall.

  • Little Makers – My First House  August 8-10, 1-4PM.  Explore basic circuits and laser cutting to create a playhouse for a favorite stuffed animal or doll.
  • Fun with Engineering & Robots! August 15-17, 1-4PM.  Explore the Engineering Design Process by building with LEGO, crafts, and recycled materials. Explore robotics and programming by building silly robots with lightbulbs, sensors, and wheels.

MIT Summer Engineering Design Workshop: Apply by May 26

Applications are now open for MIT Edgerton Center’s summer Engineering Design WorkshopJuly 5-29 at MIT’s Edgerton Center.  Apply by May 26, as decisions will be made no later than May 29.  EDW is a non-residential program for rising Grade 9-12 students in the greater Boston area working in small teams to design, build, and test projects that combine engineering, art, and science.  (See video.)  The workshop fee is $500, and financial assistance is available.

‘Benjamin Franklin’ to Speak in Lexington, May 26

Empow Studios invites children and their parents to a one-hour simulation of a 1774 meeting of the Lexington League for Scientific Discovery, featuring Dr. Benjamin Franklin and his presentation of electrical experiments.  It will take place Thursday, May 26 [2016], 6:30-7:30PM at Empow Studios (1776 Massachusetts Ave. in Lexington).  Parents may either drop-off kids or attend with them.  The cost of $20 per person includes pizza, snacks, and refreshments.

Green Schools Summit at Waterworks Museum, May 26

The 9th annual Green Schools Summit will be held at the Waterworks Museum in Boston on May 26, 9:45AM-1:50PM, for everyone interested in the Green Schools movement, including students (especially Grade 6 and above), K-16 faculty and staff, municipal/state government officials and staff, businesses, non-profits, etc.  See program for featured speakers.  K-12 students may compete in a Water Innovation Challenge.  A light lunch is included.  Register online.  Admission is free, but donations ($35 suggested) are requested.
