Einstein’s Workshop: Saturday Classes in Newton Centre

Einstein’s Workshop in Lexington recently started offering weekly classes on Saturdays in Newton Centre (Davis Hall, Andover Newton Theological Seminary, 210 Herrick Road). The first round of classes will run November 5 through December 17.  In a kick-off promotion, if you mention the name of your Newton elementary school PTO in the registration comments section, then Einstein’s Workshop will donate $10 to that PTO.

Benefit for “e” Inc.’s New ‘Environment Science Discovery’ Museum, Nov. 9

All are invited to Shakin’ for Science, a benefit for “e” Inc.’s new Environment Science Discovery & Action Museum, opening in Charlestown in January.  The fundraiser will be held at the museum (114  116th Street, Suite 1030, Charlestown Navy Yard) on November 9, 6-10PM, with drinks, dancing, an auction, and hors d’oeuvres.  Tickets are $25 until October 29, after which they will be $30.  “e” Inc. aims to “provide children, teens, and adults a scientific understanding of Earth’s national biomes, resources, and systems and the skills to protect the planet and live sustainably.”  The museum is currently open for teachers and private trips.

Register for Northeastern’s Building Bridges Program for High-School Students, Dec. 9

Northeastern University’s Building Bridges program, for high-school students interested in engineering, will take place December 9, 8:30AM-3PM, in the university’s Curry Center Ballroom.  It’s an opportunity to explore Northeastern’s engineering program, participate in engineering challenges, and learn about education and career opportunities. Registration is now open, costs $15, and includes breakfast and lunch.

Tufts CEEO 20th Anniversary Celebration, Oct. 23

Tufts University’s Center for Engineering Education and Outreach will hold its 20th anniversary celebration on October 23 with hands-on making, food robots, and novel engineering.

Elms College Offers STEM Scholarships for Fall 2017 Transfers

Elms College in Chicopee is offering NSF-funded STEM scholarships for transfer students entering in the Fall of 2017 to major in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Information Technology.  Apply online with a one-page essay by March 1.  For more information, complete the form on this page or email admissions@elms.edu. Separately, the Elms STEM program will host an open house on November 11 (9:30AM through lunch) for all prospective students.  The event is free, and lunch will be provided.  Registration is required.  For more information, email Elmstems@elms.edu.

WPI STEM Saturdays for Grades 6-8 — Waitlist Available

Worcester Polytechnic Institute offers students in Grades 6-8 a program of STEM Saturdays to inspire and enable exploration of STEM academics and careers.  This school year they will be held 8:45AM-Noon on these Saturdays:  November 19, December 3, January 28, February 18, March 18, and April 8.  The cost is $180.  Student and accompanying parent must attend all sessions.  Registration is full but the waitlist is open.

Newton Free Library: STEM Events in October

The Newton Free Library offers these STEM-related events in October:

  • October 15:  cuSTEMized, 2-4PM, all are welcome but focus is on ages 4-8.  Imagine, explore, and color with cuSTEMized coloring books featuring STEM careers.  Talk with female scientists about how the brain grows, curing cancer, and other topics.  Visit cuSTEMized.org for info.  Register online. (cuSTEMized is a non-profit organization founded by Harvard students to support girls in STEM through personalized STEM-related motivational books and posters that encourages girls to envision themselves in STEM careers and outreach events to connect girls with women in STEM fields.)
  • October 19 & 26:  CodeCampKidz, 7-8PM, grades 6-7.  Introduction to coding, with no experience necessary, but bring earbuds or headphones for audio instruction. Registration required.
  • October 27:  STEAM Ahead, 4-4:45PM, ages 3-5.  Storytime.  **
  • October 27:  3D Printing Workshop, 4-5PM, grades 7-12.  Registration required.
  • October 31:  HexBugs, 4-4:45PM, grades K-1, accompanied by an adult.  Create habitats in which to race your HexBug. **
