Empow Studios: Events in April
Empow Studios will host these events in April:
- April 12: Celebrate Robotics Week at Empow Studios with a robotics favorite: a friendly Sumo Competition! Lexington & Newton, 7-8:30PM. $25
- April 15-19: April Vacation Camp with Empow Studios in Cambridge, Brookline, Lexington, and Newton. Programs include Tech & Design Camp, Minecraft Camp, and Java Coding Camp.
Mass. Science Olympiad Results: Newton North 2nd, Newton South 4th

Congratulations to the Science Teams of Newton North HS (in photo) and Newton South HS for placing 2nd and 4th respectively among 55 high school teams in the preliminary results of this year’s Massachusetts Science Olympiad held at Framingham State University. These are preliminary results, to be finalized in the next two weeks. Each team assigns one or two students to compete in each of 25 events throughout the all-day competition. Newton North won first place in five events and second place in four:
- Gus Betts-O’Rourke, Alina Zheng, Skyler Bohnert – first, Codebusters
- Laura Schmidt-Hong and Julian Liao – first, Designer Genes
- Laura Schmidt-Hong and Emily Davis-Morin – first, Disease Detectives

- Laura Schmidt-Hong and Alina Zheng – first, Herpetology
- Eve Martin and Abby Lau – second, Astronomy
- Eve Martin, Jonathan Liu, and Jessica Chen – second, Experimental Design

- Jessica Chen, Emily Pan, and Max Tu – second, Protein Modeling
Acton-Boxborough placed first, as it has since 2009, when Newton North last came out on top.
Studio of Engaging Math: Math Festival and Open House, Apr. 7
The Studio of Engaging Math (320 Washington Street, Brighton) is hosting a Math Festival and Open House on April 7, 11AM-2PM, so that kids (ages 4-12) and their parents can play games and learn about their programs.
Grades 7-12: Register for Boston College Splash!, Apr. 6
Boston College will hold BC Splash on Sunday, April 6, 10AM-4PM (yes, on a Saturday this year!). Splash is a one-day, student-run program in which undergraduates and graduate students teach mini-courses for students in Grades 7-12. There’s also an optional one-hour session for groups of Splash students to talk with current BC undergraduates. There’s a $5.25 fee for the day, which includes a pizza lunch. FSU Presentation: Space Hero or Nazi Villain? The Life of Wernher von Braun, Mar. 28
Framingham State University‘s Moon Landing in Context series will host a presentation at its McCarthy Center Forum on March 28, 7-8:30PM: Space Hero or Nazi Villain? The Life of Wernher von Braun. The speaker will be Dr. Michael Neufeld of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. The events is free, and registration is required.
Museum of Science: Events in April
Boston’s Museum of Science has announced these events, which are included with museum admission:
- Nano Days with Quantum Leap, April 6, 11AM-4:30PM
- Ask a Spaceman Live!, April 10, 7-9PM, free registration required.
- Boston Marathon® Days, April 6-13, including presentations on Running Out of Africa and How to Train for a Marathon.
Open Houses for Robotics Week, Apr. 7-13, Ages 18+
To celebrate National Robotics Week (April 7-13), MassRobotics has arranged a series of open houses at robotics companies across the state. Admission is free, space is limited, registration is required, and you must be 18 or older.
Expeditions to STEM, Grades 7-10, Apr. 27
Expeditions to STEM is a one-day event organized by ten high-school students (including five from Newton North HS) to help students in Grades 7-10 learn about different careers and opportunities in STEM fields. It features presentations and workshops led by STEM professionals, as well as a bazaar offering information about STEM-related extracurricular activities for high-school and college students. It will take place at the CIC Venture Cafe Cambridge (1 Broadway, Cambridge) on April 27, 8:30AM-6PM.
