CSRecitations: Registration for Fall Computer Science Programs

Museum of Science: Butterfly and Caterpillar Weekend, Aug. 17-18

Boston’s Museum of Science will hold its annual Butterfly and Caterpillar Weekend, August 17-18. Attendance is free for anyone admitted to the museum’s Exhibit Halls.

This year, the weekend features the Butterfly BioBlitz census, in which you can participate in two ways:

  • Download the free app iNaturalist (iOSAndroid) and join the project called “Museum of Science Butterfly BioBlitz 2019.”
  • Download and fill out this recording sheet.

Other weekend activities include:

  • Caterpillar Lab, 10AM-3PM
  • Capillary Action Butterflies (Make and Take), 10AM-4PM
  • Little Naturalists: Butterfly Classification (Drop-In Activity), 10:30AM- 12PM and 1:30-3PM

And in the Butterfly Garden (requires purchase of separate timed ticket):

  • Monarch Migration Game, 10:30AM-12:30PM
  • Create Your Own Butterfly Habitat, 1PM-3PM

Caterpillar Lab, Free at the Arnold Arboretum, Aug. 22-26

The Caterpillar Lab, from Keene, NH, will come to the Arnold Arboretum for 5 days of fascinating exhibits that are free and amazing for all ages:  10AM-5PM daily, August 22-26, in the Arboretum’s Hunnewell Visitor Center (map). There will be live caterpillars, cocoons, hatched eggs, shed skins, and much more. The Caterpillar Lab was founded by Newton’s own Sam Jaffe, who became enthralled with nature while exploring Cold Spring Park. Auburndale Community Library: STEM is for Everyone! Math and Science is Fun!

The Auburndale Community Library is offering a course called
STEM is for Everyone! Math and Science is Fun! on Mondays, 6:30PM-7:30PM. It’s for students in ages 6-8 (accompanied by an adult), and it’s taught by a 7-year-old with her parents’ help. It’s filled with addition and subtraction games, as well as science experiments. Space is limited. Please register by emailing markrice413@gmail.com.

Code Ninjas: Back-to-School Contest due Aug. 31; Free Digital Art Workshop Aug. 13

In the month of August, Code Ninjas in Wellesley will hold a social-media Back-to-School contest that will award a $500 prize pack (including iPad) to the winner and a $1,000 donation to the winner’s school. Submissions are due August 31.

Also, Code Ninjas will host a free Digital Art Workshop for ages 7-14 on August 13, 1:30-3:30PM, to teach how to use Scratch to make artwork. Space is limited and registration is required.
