Twice a year, the MIT Museum hosts Girls Day, and the one on November 2, Exploring Our Watery World, will focus on nautical science and engineering. This family-friendly event is designed for ages 10 and up, but all are welcome. Demonstrations, presentations, hands-on activities, and discussions with women researchers are free for those with admission to the museum.

Broad Institute: From Genes to Mechanisms to Medicines — Drug Discovery, Nov. 14
Celebrating its first 15 years, the Broad Institute in Cambridge is hosting Broad@15, a series of free, public lectures. On November 14, 6-7PM, Anna Greka (Director of the Kidney Disease Initiative) and Florence Wagner (Director of Medicinal Chemistry) will speak on From Genes to Mechanisms to Medicines: Reflections on the past, present, and future of drug discovery. Wayland HS Hackathon: Hackaway For Good, Nov. 16
The Wayland High School Computer Science Club invites all area high school students to Hackaway For Good, a free, one-day hackathon on Saturday, November 16, 8:30AM-7PM at Wayland High School (264 Old Connecticut Path, Wayland). Students will work in teams to develop an app, game, web site, or idea that improves experiences for people with disabilities. No experience is necessary. Mentors from Google, Microsoft, Olin College, Perkins School for the Blind, and various startups will inspire and help. Projects will be judged and thousands of dollars in prizes will be awarded. Families and the public may attend the demonstrations and closing ceremonies at the end of the day. Space is limited. Grand Opening of Empow Labs, Oct. 30, Showcasing New Workshops
Empow Studios will hold a grand opening for Empow Labs — its new collaborative, digital makerspace for teens and adults — on October 30, 3PM-5PM, in its Newton location (180 Needham Street). Topics include in the areas of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies, 3D design and modeling, motion capture, graphic design and digital art, robotics, and Internet of Things. BioBuilder November Workshops for Ages 10-14: Kids Who Clone
BioBuilder Learning Lab will offer the following Kids Who Clone workshops held 1PM-4PM at LearningLab (700 Main Street, Cambridge) for students in ages 10-14 (ages 8-9 may participate with a parent or guardian in the lab). Weston Observatory Colloquium: The Influence of Climate Change on the Greenland Ice Sheet, Nov. 6
The Weston Observatory, Boston College’s center of geophysical research, offers periodic colloquiua open to the public. The next one will be on November 6, 7-9PM, on The Influence of Climate Change on the Greenland Ice Sheet, presented by Bost4on College Prof. Mark Behn. Teens: Meet 18 STEM Mentors at Think Big! Free Ice Cream Social, Oct. 26
To celebrate Massachusetts STEM Week, middle- and high-school students are invited to Think Big!, a free event at the Newton Free Library on Saturday, October 26, 2PM-4PM, to meet 18 local STEM professionals and talk informally (over ice cream from Cabots!) about challenges, satisfactions, and career paths in the world of STEM. These mentors represent a wide range of STEM: Microbiology, running-shoe design, software development, biomechatronics, computational biology, ecology, chemistry, drug design, solar entrepreneurship, 3D animation, manufacturing science, applied physics, genomics, and more. It’s free and space is limited, so register now. It’s sponsored by the Newton Free Library, NewtonSTEM, and the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club, with help from the Newton LigerBots. Newton’s John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club has programs for kids of all ages, and you can learn about them at the Club’s Open House on Tuesday, October 22, 5PM-7PM.
