LigerBots Announce Winners of Their 3D Printing Contest
The LigerBots — Newton’s FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team spanning both high schools — hosted a 3D printing contest for other FRC teams worldwide. It was open to anyone using 3D-printed parts for a robotics project but was aimed primarily at FRC teams that used 3D printing in building their robots for the 2017 FRC season.
1st Place: FRC Team 2702 – the Rebels of Ontario, Canada for using 3D printing for nearly all the parts for their robot.
2nd Place: FRC Team 2079 – 4H ALARM Robotics from Franklin, Massachusetts for creating a low-cost, light-weight ramp with extensions for adjusting its length.
3rd Place: FRC Team 207 – METALCRAFTERS from Hawthorne, California for using an iterative design process and 3D printing to create a climbing mechanism.
Register by June 19 for MIT’s HSSP — Sundays in Summer for Grades 7-12+
MIT’s Summer HSSP is a weekend academic program (July 9-August 13) for students entering Grades 7-12 (plus those who just graduated high school). Courses are run by volunteers on Sundays at various times between 12PM and 4PM. Registration is now open until June 19 on a lottery basis, with equal consideration given to all applicants registering by that deadline. The cost is $40 regardless of the number of courses taken, and generous financial aid is available. For more information, email summer-hssp@mit.edu. The course catalog contains these 23 STEM courses:

‘Touch Tomorrow’ STEM Festival at WPI, June 10
Worcester Polytechnic Institute and WGBH will present Touch Tomorrow — a festival of science, technology, and robots — on Saturday, June 10, 10AM-4PM at WPI (directions). It’s family-friendly, fun, free, and open to all ages — with a particular focus on what’s interesting for middle- and high-school students. WPI faculty and students will open their labs and share their work and engage the public in hands-on activities and demonstrations. Registration beforehand is appreciated. WGBH will host the Design Squad Team Challenge competition for teams of 2-6 students in Grades 5-8 to design and build a structure. See a video hint and register your team. Choose your first round (12:30 or 1:30) and be prepared to for the final round at 3PM.
MIT EurekaFest Celebrates InvenTeams, June 16-17
EurekaFest is a two-day celebration of invention and engineering sponsored by the Lemelson-MIT Program and highlighting the results of selected high-school InvenTeams from across the country. (Newton North HS participated in 2013.)

Jane Street ‘Women in STEM’ NYC Recruiting Event, July 30-Aug. 1
Jane Street Capital — a quantitative trading firm — will host its fifth annual Women in STEM event July 30-August 1, inviting selected women between senior year of high-school and freshman year of college to learn about the firm and how it uses math, computer science, and probability in its business. BoSTEM Seeks Two College Graduates as AmeriCorps Volunteers
The BoSTEM collaborative, led by Boston After School & Beyond (BASB) and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley (UWMB), aims to increase STEM interest and achievement by Boston middle-school students. It’s currently seeking two college graduates as AmeriCorps volunteers for a year of service starting in August: Coordinator and Fundraising & Partnerships Coordinator. Living allowance, health coverage, and a stipend or education award are provided.
