New NPS Deputy Superintendent is Strong on STEM

Dr. Ann Koufman-Frederick has joined Newton Public Schools as the system’s first Deputy Superintendent for Teaching & Learning.  We’re fortunate to have an educator with a strong background and interest in STEM in this new position overseeing Newton’s K-12 curriculum and professional development.  Here’s a bit of her background in STEM:

  • At BBN Learning Systems & Technologies, Ann was the developer and facilitator for Massachusetts Math projects involving Investigations Math and an online learning environment for math teachers, as part of an NSF project, “Collaboration for Reform.”
  • For her doctoral research work, she designed “Science Online” for K-5 classroom teachers and studied its use as part of her work on electronic collaboration for professional development.
  • As Director of Technology Initiatives for the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, she conducted leadership projects connected to national and statewide grants aimed at bringing technology to education for leadership and curriculum.
  • As the Academic Director for LIFT2 — a two-year professional development graduate program for middle and high school math and science teachers — she designed and facilitated the program’s professional development efforts to help teachers connect their LIFT2 summer internship work experience to their classroom teaching.
  • As Assistant Superintendent in Watertown, she facilitated the launch of that school system’s robotics program and involvement with FIRST.
