Olin College of Engineering: Summer Engineering Camps

The Olin College of Engineering in Needham is holding two engineering camps at MIT this summer for grades 2-6 to raise money for a development work trip to Uganda. One is from July 29 to August 2, and the other is from August 12 to 16. In these camps, kids will learn about engineering of energy systems, building a sustainable city with solar panels, wind turbines, Legos, and more. The cost of each camp is $750 per student, but there are several scholarships available if a family is unable to pay the full fee. The majority of the program fee serves to support Olin students’ development work in Uganda.

Register Now for MIT Summer HSSP & and School-Year Delve Programs

MIT offers its Summer HSSP on Sundays from July 7 through August 18 on the MIT campus. It offers students entering 7th grade through first year of college an in-depth look at a variety of both academic and nonacademic subjects (see catalog). Cost is $40, with generous financial aid available. Registration is now open, on a first-come first-served basis, until July 1.

On Sundays during the school year, MIT’s Delve program offers academically motivated students in grades 9-12 a chance to learn exciting academic topics such as Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Psychology, and Statistics. The program prepares students to take an AP exam. Classes are four hours on Sunday mornings and early afternoons. Registration is open on a rolling basis until courses are filled. Cost is $250 (plus book deposit and AP exam fee) with generous financial aid available. For more information, email delve@mit.edu.

NNHS InvenTeam Selected to Present at MIT, June 20-21

The Newton North High School InvenTeam is one out of four teams chosen to present at the Lemelson-MIT Program’s 2013 EurekaFest. The public is invited to the presentations by 2013 InvenTeams and Lemelson-MIT Collegiate Student Prize Winners in the Kirsch Auditorium MIT Stata Center (32 Vassar Street, Cambridge) on Thursday, June 20 2PM-4PM. The 2013 InvenTeams will exhibit their invention prototypes at the InvenTeams Showcase on Friday, June 21 5PM-7:30PM in the Stata Center.

NNHS Science Team Seeks Donations & Sponsors for National Meets

The Newton North HS Science Team has had a stellar year of competitions and has qualified for two national competitions: one in Florida at the end of June and one in Bozeman, Montana, in August. The team is now preparing to compete and seeking to raise approximately $10,000 to offset the expenses for these trips. Newton community members can help in two ways.

(Checks can be made out to the “City of Newton” with “NNHS Science Team” in the memo line.)
Corporate sponsors are being recruited and will be acknowledged on the team’s banners and t-shirts for these competitions as well as through local media after the competitions. Companies and organizations interested in being sponsors should contact Ms. Winston at amy_winston@newton.k12.ma.us.

The NNHS Envirothon team finished first in a statewide competition last month, coming in first place in all ecostations (Soils, Wildlife, Water, and Forestry) and second place in its Current Issue presentation on the condition of Newton’s ailing urban forest and street trees. In all, the NNHS Science Team participated in seven competitions this year and placed in the top ten in each.

Rep. Kennedy to Lead Mass. STEM Council, Cites Newton Program

U.S. Representative Joseph Kennedy has succeeded Lt. Gov. Tim Murray as chair of the Massachusetts STEM Advisory Council. Rep. Kennedy sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology and is supporting IL Rep. Bill Foster’s bill to create a national STEM grant program for school districts. In a succession ceremony, Kennedy highlighted a partnership he observed between the Brown Middle School in Newton and Boston University where engineering students taught seventh graders for credit about the physics of a wind turbine and led them in a competition to design a turbine on a budget that produced the most energy.

NNHS Green Campus Project — Launch Party, May 21

Each year, NNHS’ ED EX Campaign selects target projects to help create up-to-date, diverse, and stimulating curriculum. The 2013 project is the Green Campus Project, led by the Greengineering group, to create an outdoor classroom, an organic gardening project, and a green wall (vertical garden) demonstration. A launch party will be held May 21, 7PM-8:30PM at the NNHS Greenineering Lab (by the Theatre entrance). NNHS aims to raise $25,000 from the NNHS community to fund this project. First Annual NSHS Science Open House, May 23, 3-6PM

Everyone in the Newton community is welcome to come to Newton South HS on May 23, 3PM-6PM, for the first annual NSHS Science Open House. Take a tour of South Science and see what NSHS has been up to! Features will include:

A display of current science student projects in biology, chemistry and physics
Science team students demonstrating and leading interactive science experiments (younger kids welcome!)
An appearance of the LIGERBOTS robot
Science student and faculty awards

MassBay Summer Programs for Middle and High School Students

MassBay Community College in Wellesley Hills will offer these 10-day summer STEM programs:

NNHS-Sponsored Science Initiatives Competition, May 18: UPDATED

Because the NNHS science team has qualified for TEAMS/JETS national competitions, their Science Initiatives Competition on May 18 has been revised. It will be held 9:30AM-1:30PM at the Microsoft store at Prudential Center. Cost is $10 at the door. Competitions will be individualized, not team-based.
